I have always considered cables as cables used to connect equipment together. On another audio forum, which I will not name, the majority of posters say cables are classified as equipment.
Just curious what AA members classify ICs, speaker cables, and power cords as.
I have never thought of cables as being audio equipment.

...since they aren't active, I consider them accessories like vibration control and power line conditioning, although they are essential, unlike those other examples.
Like most accessories, they can change the sound of the music reproduction in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.
That's better than calling them audio equipment.
I am almost of the opinion that the equipment RACK ought to be also considered as EQUIPMENT.
The equipment rack is a piece equipment by it's shear name. So is Foot Ball equipment. Neither will record or play music though.

In the building electrical industry branch circuit wiring is not called equipment. It is fed from equipment and equipment can be connected to it.
But it is not classified as equipment.
Definition of equipment from NEC Article 100.
Equipment. A general term, including fittings, devices, appliances, luminaires, machinery, and the like used as a part of or in connection with, an electrical installation.

Fine if you can. I can't. Equipment designed to reproduce music as faithfully as possible, would be my definition of high-end audio equipment. If you want a consumer player DEVICE (note, NOT equipment), get an iPod.

No one is saying they are not needed. They are what they are. They are Cables, not equipment.
Ics connect audio equipment together.
Speaker cables connect speakers to an audio equipment amplifier.
Power cords connect the mains power to audio equipment.
Tell you what, if you have a B&M Dealer in you area stop in and tell the salesperson you are there to look at some speaker cable equipment and see what his response is.
Cables surely play an important role. I wouldn't be bothered about how anyone classifies them. Since people are involved there will be a difference of opinion.

Equipment... Plainly and simply because it is difficult to successfully operate a system without them.
I would not consider a cable as an accessory because an accessory is, according to the dictionary definition...
"a thing which can be added to something else in order to make it more useful, versatile, or attractive." .
i.e. not something that is required to make it work.
On a number of websites, Cartridges are also considered "Accessories". But, once again, try using your turntable without one. Hence, I would also consider cartridges as equipment, rather than accessories.
Items that I would class as accessories are, for example, equipment stands, Speaker stands, power conditioners or Record cleaners, because a system operates without them, but adding them makes the system "more useful, versatile, or attractive."

The notion of audio cables as components has become better realized over the years. Audio cables were once considered no more important than audio accessories, with little credibility in terms of the value of audio cables as a vital element within the signal chain. A good analogy is to compare the nature of an audio cable to that of an audio capacitor, with sonic characteristics many folks can identify as beneficial to the presentation of a component and/or the gestalt of an audio system. If one finds different audio capacitors provide sonic betterment within a system, all the more important a cable is to provide the fundamental link with great responsibility to deliver high performance signal integrity from one component to another. Even if some folks don't believe in the sonic benefits of high performance cables, it's commonly understood that an audio system is only as good as its weakest link.
I am and have been a long time believer in cables can and do make a difference in the SQ of an audio system.
I still do not understand how cables could be classified as equipment. We don't say capacitors, resistors, or other electronic components are audio equipment. Or signal or power traces or hook up wire is audio equipment. Yes they are used in circuits that make up the equipment but they are not classified as equipment.
Jim
Equipment is a term, not unlike component is a term, while classification can be considered a marketing term. Other than that, capacitors, resistors, and other electronic components are not standalone devices that have strictly independent functions like that of what a lonely cable must provide, in and of itself, with hopeful synergy involved in its sole function as an interface device. Cables tend to fly solo in what they provide, with high performance I/O jacks as their helpers, if lucky.
