Hi. Banpuku;
I've changed the magnet wire config several times, but kept the reptile sand filled tubes for nearly 5 years, IIRC. It performs very well in my old system. YMMV, as you know.
The reptile sand is about $20.00 for a 10 lb. bag, and can be found at the pet store. I bought the "Desert White" version. I see Unclestu has another source for you if you want to try the sand-in-tube thing.
Have fun....old guy

where are you, Stu?
In Honolulu. They banned public smoking a couple of years ago, So hotels no longer have those ashtrays with that pure white sand. It ued to be cheap $15 for 25 pounds.
IIRC Bright Star also recommended quartz sand. They had recommended checking toy stores which sell sand boxes. I have prints for a W-6 output transformer and they packed the cans with quartz sand also before filling with tar.
A local construction company uses the quartz sand for certain mortar work and the fact that it is stronger not having any salt contamination.
