In an article by Steve Nugent of Empirical Audio in Positive Feedback Online - Issue 14, he recommends usage of at least a 1.5 meter S/PDIF Digital cable.

Keep in mind that when it comes to 75 ohm S/PDIF digital cables, a proper 75 ohm termination and implementing a specific coaxial cable that is less dependent on length, such as those known to perform well at a shorter length such as 0.5m can negate the notion of a mandatory 1.5m length minimum. I can't vouch for that of a USB cable.
