This is interesting. I needed a 1 foot USB cable to connect my DAC to my Audio PC. My original USB cable was 1.5m. After burning in the 1 foot USB cable, the sound was not right (thin and brittle). When I went back to the 1.5m cable all is well. Both cables had over 100 hours of use and the same materials and plugs. The sonic differences were real and repeatable with a few other listeners in agreement.
This phenomenon compares to the SPDIF coax argument of cable reflections for cable lengths less than 1.5m. Yet USB and SPDIF are different protocols. See link below.
Opinions?

You failed to mention if the cables compared were by the same mfg and model.
Identical, just the length. These are DIY.
So what do you all think. Is a 1.5M cable the minimum length??? Does this make any technical sense?
See link:
Duster: This is true for SPDIF coax. I found no similar reference for USB.
Below is the gracious response I received from Steve N. of Empirical Audio:
Yes, I recommend it for all digital cables.

In an article by Steve Nugent of Empirical Audio in Positive Feedback Online - Issue 14, he recommends usage of at least a 1.5 meter S/PDIF Digital cable.
Does this recommendation hold true for USB cables?

Thanks, Charlie8521! The sonic results seem to prove this out.
Thank you for the excellent info. 1.5M it is.
Keep in mind that when it comes to 75 ohm S/PDIF digital cables, a proper 75 ohm termination and implementing a specific coaxial cable that is less dependent on length, such as those known to perform well at a shorter length such as 0.5m can negate the notion of a mandatory 1.5m length minimum. I can't vouch for that of a USB cable.
