My guess is that they forgot to remove the coating from the one end of a wire before crimping on the spade. We all have days like that. A shame you threw them out since the fix would have taken 5-10 minutes, but I guess you were pretty frustrated by that time. Too bad, IMO anticables are surprisingly good.

Removing the coating at the ends is indeed a good guess. I bought bulk wire from them and did my own banana connections as the cheapest option. Once stripped and screwed to the connectors I found these cables very neutral and well worth the cost.
Stripping the coating was the bulk of the effort. I used my dremmel on slow speed with a wire wheel and used almost no contact pressure. Worked great.
If he had cute little dogs like those to cheer him up, he might not have been so reactive.
