Hi Guys,
Possible silly question here...my speakers allow me to tri-wire. Wondering if there could be any adverse effects (main concern to amps) if I were to...bi-wire tweeter and mid driver with brand A...and a separate run to the woofers with brand B. Nothing exotic....bi-wire cables would be Supra ply. MIT MH750 to the woofers. MITs are super old - 25 years. Bi-wire supras would be connected via spades to amp. MITs via banana plugs.
Follow Ups:
I have considered silver on the positive and copper on the negative. Or switching them depending on preference.
Using different cables for different drivers would be so unpredictable and random... but who knows until you try. I always use different cables w subs but never really thought about discontinuity in these lower frequencies until now.
You'll never notice the difference.
I wouldn't use old speaker cable, though. All those tired electrons couldn't possibly be doing you any good.
Too much is never enough
by mixing cables, you are asking for a discontinuity.....I would never do it.
pc-
give us an update...
Trying out ground control tweak now. Improved dynamics and detail. Larger soundstage, fuller sound and bass a little tighter. System also sounds louder approx between 5 to 10 percent. However, noticed a little more noise (more than usual in the form of hiss and a very very slight hum from the mid driver)
Will update you guys about the speaker cable mix soon.
Thanks! for the update.
Some will work well together (blend), others not. You just have to try it to hear.
As a guess I suspect it could depend a lot on where the crossover point from the woofer td is, the lower the less likely there could be a problem. I consider low from about 100 Hz to below 200. If it's around 400 Hz you're well into the midrange with the woofers and sharing the mids between 2 drivers.
No worries from a safety POV, but mix & match cabling can be a hit & miss effort, particularly tonality and phase related issues.
You can expect a mixed sound. It could be good or bad- keep us posted.
Given the very different construction of those cables, I would expect them to sound different. If that is the case, there would be a audible discontinuity in the crossover region. However, if you already have the cables, there is no harm in trying.
