Mogami 2534 is meant to be wired in star quad form for maximum noise rejection which is the picture on the right .. Blue/Blue and Clear/Clear. If you wire as shown on the left if you are not careful you can create a short. You would have to trace your clear and blue wires end to end so that you don't have one clear mating with a different blue on the other end. This is why Mogami only uses two colors so that you don't have to do that. If wiring as to the picture on the left there is no advantage over two conductor wiring.

The diagram you posted is for a single channel application, not a dual channel headphone application. The correct wiring scheme for a dual channel headphone application is Blue & Clear/Blue & Clear.The benefit of a cross connected star-quad geometry is a matter of lowered inductance and noise cancellation based on equally opposing fields within a 4-conductor cable. A 2-channel 4-conductor cable cross connected couples the conductors which leads to greater inter-channel cross talk. For example: A proper internal bi-wire star quad speaker cable is wired side-by-side, not cross connected like that of a single channel star-quad speaker cable.

You are correct. I didn't let the headphone application sink into my head.
Due to the confusion in my mind about this issue, I have finally e-mailed MOGAMI, and I have received the following reply:
"1) same color pair for one channel
It reduces crosstalk between left and right channel. But
it is necessary to identify the GND side conductor for
phasing.
2) different color pair for one channel
It increases the crosstalk between left and right channel
a little. But it is easier to identify the GND side conductor
for phasing "

I find that information to be contrary to how DIY Mogami headphone cables are built that I've come across. You can easily tell which wiring scheme sounds better via a headphone application by experimenting: If the soundstage collapses one way or the other, choose the method that provides the most expansive soundstage, imaging, and other spatial cues.
I can assure you that it is an OFFICIAL reply from MOGAMI.
This matter can be confusing, since there are two different types of terminations involved in the stereo headphone cable:
1. At the source end, the 4-conductors are terminated with a single 3-pole TRS phone or 3.5mm stereo mini plug.
2. At the load end, the 4-conductors are individually terminated as a stereo pair of conductors, one twisted pair for each channel.
Regarding the Mogami 2534 when implemented as a DIY headphone cable, with two opposing blue conductors, and two opposing clear conductors within the cable bundle (see above image):
At the source end (TRS connector): The 4-conductor cable is connected in a similar manner as a cross connected star-quad cable, in that the two opposing clear conductors are terminated to the common ground sleeve for both channels negative (-), while one opposing blue conductor is terminated to the tip for the left channel positive (+), and the other opposing blue conductor is terminated to the ring for the right channel positive (+).
As such: At the load end (headphones): The four conductors are separated into two twisted pairs: One twisted pair of clear & blue for the left channel, and one twisted pair of clear & blue for the right channel.
As far as I can see, that is *NOT* the termination recommended by MOGAMI for best sound quality.
