I bought locally a 25' XLR to 1/4" phone plug cable for
our church's electronic piano and it sounds like crap.
I was hoping that it just needed some breaking in
but after 6 months there is no improvement.
I am thinking of adapting the 1/4" phone plug output to
XLR because the system is balanced then use an XLR cable
to connect it to the snake head.
I did the same for the guitar amp and that works fine.
How is the Radio Shack one pictured above?
Is there a better one?

Follow Ups:
I would remove the 1/4" plug & put on the XLR.
Is your direct box functioning properly? Phantom power? Correct input at the board? Gain structure? Even the effects can overload the board preamp, so I would simply unplug everything, zero all controls (including the piano) & start over.

The piano has only a 1/4" jack output
so that cannot be changed.
I have a cable that has a XLR on one end
and a 1/4" plug on the other end.
I did just find a couple of direct boxes
but don't know how good they function.
A Rolls DB35 and a DOD 260 direct boxes.
On research the DOD is more expensive
and has less features so I would assume
that it is a more high end item.
So that is another posibility.

OK Dan, I take it you're running direct from the piano to the board? If so, that's why you're getting "bad" sound, as you need to match the signal from the output of the piano into the board. That is the simple explanation-it's more detailed than that but you get the picture.
Run 1/4" to 1/4" from the piano to the direct box then XLR to XLR to the board. I would suggest using a passive direct box, as it's easier to set-up. Also, you don't need the most expensive one out there but I wouldn't get the cheapest either. (Think Whirlwind) The only reason you would really need an active DI is if you got hiss, which prob. won't happen w/keys or piano.
You can also run 1/4" out of the DI (if so equipped) to an amp (if you have one) to use as a monitor.
Let me know how it works out.

I assumed the Whirlwind cable would impedance match
but I guess I attributed too much from them.
DanL
Dan, the cable can't do the matching; that's why you need a DI box. I mentioned Whirlwind for their DI box. You need to run balanced from the DI to the board.
I have band practice Friday & will take some pics of our set-up for you (if I remember my camera!) so you can see what I'm talking about.

I have TWO DI boxes - A DOD pictured above
and a Rolls seen here -

Also the RadioShack unit has a transformer in it.

Hi Dan, were you using 1/4" out of the DI to the board or from the piano to the board? Either way, you're not getting a true balanced signal.
It has to be XLR> XLR from the DI to the board to work properly.
Jeff
I understand you completely.
I ordered some cables to use with the DI Box.
A Samson Tourtek TI6 for the 1/4" cable.
And a Canare Star Quad for the XLR cable.
I'll try both boxes to see which works better.
Thanks
DanL
Hi Dan, please do drop me an email down the road & let me know how it works out. Jeff
All adapters suck...
