I can understand your reluctance to buy into some of the tweaks touted online. I feel the same way but try to keep an open mind. Be willing to listen and you may find a few to be worthwhile.

Have you any way to borrow some interconnects? I am no expert but it seems cables are synergetic to the gear and with each other.
Don’t be afraid to try a power cable first. Look to your outlet also. I do not understand how a darn duplex outlet can affect sound the way it did in my system. This is a very odd hobby.
