Image: Oyaide P-004 Beryllium AC plug and C-004 Beryllium IEC connector
“So that’s what the R1 really sounds like”, was the first thing that came to mind after re-terminating a DIY cryo’d VH Audio Flavor 2 power cord with Oyaide’s new P-004 Beryllium AC plug and C-004 Beryllium IEC connector. The 004’s replaced an Oyaide P-046 AC plug and C-046 IEC connector, and the power cord (in this case) is connected to an Oyaide R1 Beryllium AC outlet (mounted on an Oyaide WPC-Z installed at the wall) which feeds my entire main system via downstream power line conditioners.
With the 004 Beryllium AC connectors in place, the potential of the outstanding Oyaide R1 Beryllium AC outlet seems to be fully realized. Well, perhaps as fully realized as I can afford, since Oyaide’s premium line M1 Beryllium AC plug and F1 Beryllium IEC connector are cost-prohibitive per my audio dollar budget. The much more affordable 004 Beryllium AC connectors omit the M1/F1 flagship model’s cost-no-object machined aluminum and Delrin shell system in favor of the less pricey P/C model’s polycarbonate shell (the P/C models being the 029’s, 037’s, 046’s, 079’s, and now the newly included 004’s).
The overall impression of the R1/004 combo is that of a near perfect AC outlet/AC connector mating, and arguably the SOTA configuration (other than an R1/M1/F1 configuration). In this case, when a set of Oyaide 046 palladium AC connectors replaced a set of Oyaide 079 gold AC connectors, the overall presentation improved, but when the 046’s were replaced with a set of the new Oyaide 004 Beryllium AC connectors, an ambiguous veil seemed to be lifted which allowed ambient information, trailing decays, and inner detail/layering to become more readily apparent. Treble energy became substantially more relaxed yet still highly resolved, and the transition of treble energy to midrange energy became more seamless. Midrange information became a more palpable focal point as it should be (IMHO), since that’s where the majority of musical information resides. The bottom end (concurring with kenster's impressions) became more authoritative, full-bodied, yet firm and punchy. My evaluation of the Oyaide Beryllium's tonality and soundstage presentation is that it seems more relaxed and natural (without added warmth as a result), and the lower plane of the soundstage feels better anchored to the floor. Aside from the usual list of improved critical listening cues, an improved sense of PRAT (Pace, Rhythm, Acceleration, Timing) is a most vital aspect of what many folks seek within audio reproduction, and I find the Beryllium combo's “boogie factor” to be excellent...
As a special note: I must say that I find the treble presentation to be the most remarkable aspect. For listeners who find/found that their particular system’s treble energy to be emphasized/spotlighted via other Oyaide AC gear (and don’t care for such), the R1 and/or the 004’s would likely be a far more satisfactory option, since the Oyaide Beryllium’s treble energy sounds quite the opposite -- perhaps some folks might even find the top end to sound too laid back -- but this aspect would be a real pity to use as a reason to summarily reject them. However, if a listener has become deeply accustomed to (and firmly in favor of) a very lively top end with “lots of air”, the Oyaide Beryllium products might be a disappointment. If this were the case, I would suggest that a listener re-evaluate their system’s upper midrange/lower treble presentation via program material such as a steel string acoustic guitar played with prominent picking and strumming transient attacks, or a well-recorded acoustic piano track to realize how welcome a glare-free, well-pronounced upper midrange and lower treble can be rather than a presentation of unduly excited upper-octave energy, which is not only not high fidelity, a harmonic discordance in relationship to the fundamental is often the mother of all listening fatigue in otherwise high performance systems when not recognized and properly addressed.
Cheers, Duster
Dusre: Sorry, I posted a question on an earlier post. Thanks for the great Oyaide P-004 review. What cable are you using w. these plugs? thanks,Basilio

See link below and look under the "AC Power" section to find the "Unshielded Twisted Pair" and "Ground wire" products (VH Audio recommends the 12 AWG ground wire for a DIY Flavor 2). Techflex Clean Cut sleeving to finish the DIY power cord can also be found on the web site (as well as the Oyaide AC connectors):
Nice post! I'm bummed I didn't get a hold of you beforehand so as to get a male AC end only report then the IEC to see if they equally contributed or one was more important. I want to add a male soon. But where do I stop? A female going into the Gray? Needs to be a 20A IEC. Then the Gray outlets, or two of them anyway. Then...... OK you get the point. Time , money and so on.

One of these days I am going to try the Oyaide M1 connectors and maybe even the Acrolink big boys but for now, I am continually amazed every time I sit down and have a listen :-)
As an aside, I just swapped out an Oyaide SWO-GX for a cryo'd/cooked R1 in my balanced power unit and once again, am floored by the improvement the R1 brings to the musical presentation.
The R1 is directly fed by the balanced transformer and then the other receptacles are daisy chained from there so the R1 is having a cumulative effect on everything plugged into the unit. I will give it a few days to settle in before I post the details.
Cheers my friend,
~kenster
When you swapped SWO-GX for R1 have you heard the same effect of reducing energy in upper midrange and lower treble (becoming more relaxed)?
I have Oyaide power strip with three SWO-GX receptables and I would like to change them for R1 one day. All my power cords are Black Sand Violet with standard connectors, do you think I should try P/C 004 instead? I am not sure what to do first...
Thank you
Regards
Goran
"When you swapped SWO-GX for R1 have you heard the same effect of reducing energy in upper midrange and lower treble (becoming more relaxed)?"
I didn't notice any reduction of energy per say, what I did notice is that the presentation of high frequency instruments is alot cleaner and that the bass is way more energetic/defined. In my situation, this translates into a very precise/open/3D soundstage which I'm sure can be attributed to a lowering of the noise floor. To my ears, the SWO-GX sounds lethargic when compared to the R1.
As to your second question, I would change over to the R1's in your power strip before changing connectors on your Black Sands cables. Also get the R1's cryo'd and cooked if U can. Then when your budget allows, swap over to the P-004/C-004 connectors on your cables :-)

I recently switched the power cord on my amp and cd player. One had wattgate gold 330i connectors, the other had furutech rhodium connectors. I am now using a cord with C-004/P004 connectors, and another with M1/F1 connectors.
Considering the cords are all different, its hard to say how much of the new sound is coming from the connectors, but here is what I have noticed:
-rhodium cord had a vivid midrange, tight bass and forward highs
-330i cord had the warmest tone, with slightly boomy bass and laid back coloured highs
-both new cords have rock solid bass, the vivid mids of the rhodium cord, and relaxed highs with proper tone
Biggie.

"-330i cord had the warmest tone, with slightly boomy bass and laid back coloured highs"
I've found an excellent remedy for what you describe as being unfavorable about the gold Wattgate AC connectors (as well as the gold Wattgate AC outlet) -- I find the gold Wattgate AC connector's unfavorable sonic signature aspects are very much improved when mated with the relatively new to the market silver Wattgate 381 Ag AC outlet -- the same remedy (in reverse) for the gold Wattgate 381 AC outlet is the silver Wattgate 330i Ag AC plug and silver Wattgate 350i Ag IEC connector combo.
My two VH Audio AirSine power cords (one placed on preamp; the other placed on power amp) are terminated with gold Wattgate 330i AC plugs and gold Wattgate 350i IEC connectors. When the AirSine's are plugged into silver Wattgate 381 Ag AC outlets the unfavorable sonic signature aspects are transformed, not unlike mating a gold Oyaide P-079 AC plug with a palladium Oyaide SWO-XXX AC outlet (The notion of not mating dissimilar metals seems to not be applicable towards AC gear, since many folks certainly enjoy the popular SWO-XXX/079 combo, and a Wattgate gold/silver combo also presents fine synergy to my ear).
As for the gold Wattgate 381 AC outlet remedy, my DIY VH Audio Flavor 3 power cord (placed on CDP implemented as digital transport) is terminated with a silver Wattgate 330i Ag AC plug and silver Wattgate 350i Ag IEC connector -- when plugged into a gold Wattgate 381 AC outlet, the same type of synergy occurs to my ear.
:-)
I forgot to mention, the 330i was plugged into a furutech silver outlet. I also want to reiterate that all 4 cords were different, so I was not comparing apples to apples. :p
I ended up replacing the silver outlet with a new model furutech gold outlet, since I was afraid my system would lose too much warmth with the new cords.
Biggie.
I'm using a Tunami GPX PC at home, and will replace the p-046 with
a p-004, and see what happens.
Thanks again for a great review.
Im one who doesnt like the SWO-XXX 'spotlighting' on my front end (although its fine on my poweramps) and I have to agree that the R1, C-004, P004 combo is fantastic. I have it feeding my front end via an isolating transformer and preamp (Modwright Signature) directly via some Neotech NEP-3001 cable. I love it.
Mines only got 300 hours on it so it got more time to settle but it will be hard to be objective from this point on as Ive just upgraded all 16 caps in my preamp. But from what I have heard so far I love the combo and recommend it without reservation.
And the way I terminated my cables was to emulate a poor mans M1/F1. I wrapped the ends in a thick strip of ERS cloth and used a 1 1/2 inch heat shrink to seal it tightly around the barrels.
