Dare I ask the price?
Follow Ups:
I will have to sit down and crunch some numbers before I can quote a firm price. From a quick stab at the parts cost, the design development cost and the amount of labor to fit it all together I'm guessing it would be in the $7K-8K range.
Are you serious? There is a LOT of competition out there under the $5k mark.
I'm not sure what competition has to do with this particular project. I built this primarily on a whim, for use by some engineer friends in a recording and mastering studio for monitoring use. It evolved into a more complex project as Paul Stubblebine expressed some additional needs that this amp could address in the main mastering studio. Somebody asked me here what it would cost to have another built, and I quoted a rough figure based on the industry formula standard for costing. In the professional mastering and recording world of $50K monitors, $25K tape consoles, $15K DACs and $10K mics the price really isn't that out of line.
I thought this was a product you were bringing to market for headphone users. LOL. Boy, was I wrong. When I heard a while back you were working on a headphone rig, I was hoping for a sub $1k kit project. How far off are we from that? ? ?
Well, we have a certain "secret" project right at the top of the list. PJ and I will probably start putting a production prototype together after I get back from a short vacation next week.Among other things (think versatility, lots of versatility) this device should have a headphone jack and cost a whole lot less than a K dollar.
Can't spill too much more info. Suffice it to say that parafeed autoformer technology is one of those things that would be trickle down technology from our studio gear.
Considering that it took Doc about 8 months to finish it, I don't think he's actively looking for customers! But you can count on seeing some of the technology that went into it trickling down to the regular Bottlehead products. That's a big reason for getting involved with the studio guys - we learn a lot.
