I followed the recent discussion about horn speakers using full-range drivers like the Fostex 103 and the Buschhorn enclosure. I built the Buschhorn MKII and was impressed how a little single driver can play music with only an inexpensive correction network for the midrange peak.
In the meantime I found the design of the Buschhorn MK3 on the net, bulit it as well and wooooow. This design is using a second driver to improve bass and to support the Fostex below 200 Hz. The second driver is a Monacor SPP 100/8 which costs 22Euro in Germany, so itīs only a small additional investment. The bass driver is working direktly into a front loaded horn while the Fostex driver has his own small enclosure in the front of the box. Iīm using this combination without any correction, both speakers in parallel direkt linked to my Dynaco ST70 preamplified by my FP. Itīs amazing how much better this speaker works in comparison with the former Buschhorn design. Give it a try and you will entirely agree to my impression. Follow Ups:
Having just completed a second pair of Buschhorn Mk2s, I am intrigued by the idea of additional bass. Although I was surprised to hear just how much more bass I was getting out of the new cabinets with Korean RS 40-1197s than the older cabinets with Fostex 108 Sigmas. Yeah, the RS speakers roll off above 11kHz, but they provide a significant bass enhancement. (These 40-1197s have two coats of Dammar varnish on the cone and dust cap with window putty squeezed onto the basket frame for damping.)
I just moved the wires from my Paramours from one set to the other, and it was like I'd added a subwoofer. I'd definitely let my ear be trained to "hear around" the coloration of the Fostex.(I damped the new cabinets in a slightly different way, so part of me is wondering if that's part of the reason for the added bass response. Now I'm going to have to swap drivers, play with stuffing; the whole nine yards.)
Is the Mk3 likely to be as friendly to low-power triodes as was the MkII?
Yes they are low-power triode friendly. The Monacor driver has 92db. The advantage of the new B-Horn III design is that the Fostex driver getīs the load of the bass from his sholder which leads to a improved midrange and top-end clearness. Of course the low-end-bass will extend as well. Iīm still experimenting with the damping. So far I made it quiet simple. Both compression chambers are filled with damping material and the last sharp corner of the Horn. I will let you know once I got the final solution.

Stuart:As with T-lines and TQWP, the subject of damping these enclosures can be enthusiatically discussed by DIY'ers. Would you care to elaborate on the methods you employed on your B-Horns?
My own pair is 3/4" 13ply baltic birch, with (coarse grit sand-blasting)sand filling in the large internal lower voids. I think this reduced cabinet resonances a bit, but it's really hard to remove! The compression chamber damping is an issue I'm still unsure about. Any suggestions?
I'm using a pair of the drivers in the attached link, and have access to several more pair to play with before spending real dollars on any Fostex drivers.
