I'm going to be building a Foreplay as my first project, so I've been shopping around for a power amp to put behind it. The Dynaco ST-70's seem to be so popular that the prices just keep going up and up. What about the ST-35? Is this a worthwhile piece? How much should I reasonably pay for one? Should I keep saving for an ST-70?

I've been using a Similar Heathkit AA-111 amp with my Foreplay and Paramours, switching the amps in and out. The sound of the EL-84 tubes is quite nice and the bit of extra power is useful with some kinds of music. The ST-35 uses similar topology so I would expect it to sound similar. And the output transformers are worth snatching up just to have for some project in the future. But please use them, it would be a shame to have them just sitting on a shelf un-used.
I believe that most listeners prefer the sound of the EL-84 to the EL-34 found in the ST-70 - there is( a bit) less bass with the smaller tube but the midrange is beautiful. My Heath amp gives up little to the harmonic and dynamic qualities of Doc's awesome SE Paramours.
You would probably want to re build the power supply. I replaced all the caps and resistors with standard mid-quality modern polypropylene(Solen) metalized and tin foil)caps and Vishay/Dale film/foil and WW power and Rohm carbon resistors in the PS and on the circuit boards. The best change was to add an additional filtering stage using a pair of GE 4uF 600V oil caps. This REALLY opened up the music! These same caps sound great in the output stage of my Paramours(Parafeed).Good luck!

I have owned both the Stereo 70 and Stereo 35 and while the bass extension is not as pronounced in the Stereo 35 I prefer the Stock ST35 to a Stock ST70. The ST 35 just seems to have less coloring in the sound to my ears and a more acurate sound. One note on the Stereo 35 I haven't found a replacement cap for the quad that will fit under the stock cage. You will most likely have to build up modern caps to get the required values for a replacement if the one in your amp is bad.
