I am building a Bottlehead SEX Amp. and I am thinking seriously of purchasing "The Horn speakers" from the Horn Shoppe or possibly the Maadisound BK-16 speakers. I have read many posts concerning these speakers and they are highly recommended. But I have never heard either set! Are there any Bottleheads in the Washington, DC, suburbs, Baltimore area that have these speakers and would be willing to let me drive over and take a listen. Perferrably with a SEX Amp.
Follow Ups:
The two named speakers are quite different in many respects - IINM, the Full Monty Madisound BK16 kit includes a T90 horn tweeter, and sells for almost twice the price of the Hornshoppe FE126E horns.
Depending on your listening habits, the SEX amp might be borderline for party SP levels in a huge room, but certainly more than adequate for average relaxed listening.
I've heard an older pair with the FE108Sigma on Paramour I, and a current pair with FE126E on both a DIY EL84 P/P (5watts class A triode), and Vaughn Audio Carina - a gorgeous sounding EL84 SE, but not quite enough power for the Horn's owner in triode mode.
You could always post an query at Ed's manufacturer's forum for someone close to your location - there are many hundreds of pairs of Horns out there - chances are someone with driving distance from you.
You are welcome to hear my horns if you are willing to treck up to the Philly area. I sent you a email a while back…John
But it’s the sense of satisfaction I get, by getting it to do anything at all…

2wo,
I just sent you an email concerning your offer to demo your Horn Shoppe "The Horn" speakers. If for some reason the email didn't go through to you please contact me again via the Forum.

19118 where are you and what horns do you have? i could bring my amp/shug. black bottle treasure 2a3 tubes and jj2a3-40's for comparison.
Well that's two. Maybe we can have a mini meet, perhaps as early as this Sunday. I work the folowing weekend. Ray, Fritz and anyone else that is not too far would be welcome. Let me know what dates work...John

Sorry, I can't do this weekend. Sister & brother-in-law arriving and much wine to be drunk.

I still have my BK 16's but they are at the beach in "slower" Delaware. I'll be down there next weekend and can bring them back to give to Ray to take to the meet. Ray can reply to this post and let us know if he has room in his car. He and I are within pretty easy driving distance of each other. I may be able to make the meet myself, but I cannot commit as yet. Fritz
Ok, I shoudl be able to bring them since they aren't that big. Fritz, let me know when you have them and I will come around and collect them.

A few years back one of our members, Fritz, brought the BK-16's along to a few meets but I don't think he has them now.
There usually is a selection of relatively hi-eff speakers so you can hear some alternatives to the two you mentioned.
Below is a link to the last meet at Steve's place. You will be made most welcome.

Thanks Ray,
I plan on attending the next Mid Atlantic Bottlehead Meet in Sterling, VA. I will keep and eye on the Meet posts to see if anyone brings to two amps mentioned and if not I may suggest.
I really enjoyed the link to photos of past Mid Atlantic Meets.

I remembered this morning that I had seen 'jelx' before and that you came to the meet in PA. So obviously you know all about us.
Take a look at the half chang concept in the link below. At the last meet at Steve's place, a pair of them turned up with inexpensive Pioneer speakers in them. They produced more bass than I expected, but the midrange was not up to the standard of the more expensive speakers. I can't remember who brought them along.
By the way, if you really want to build speakers and don't have all the wood working gear at home, the county there has some sort of workshop with all the tools you need plus instruction on how to use them. Talk to Steve about it.

and the metronomes with Fostex FE127E before that. I also have a pair of simple BR boxes with Fostex FE167E. I'm hoping to have my Extended S.E.X. amp done for the meet and can bring the Fostex based speakers. The Half Changs were made for someone else.
I'm a bit envious of those of you who build speakers. I am restricted to the back deck out in the open so I only build when I think there will be good weather for a while. Perhaps I should move to Stirling so I could get access to the public workshop.

I don't even have enough storage space for tools to do woodwork on my deck.
Remember, YOU are the only one who needs to be happy with the sound of your system
