The "milky" look is from the RTV (silicon goop) with which he filled the tube, in order to make the unit less fragile. If I were to attempt such a creation, I'd use a defunct EL84 or similar 9 pinner.
I suppose that it is a far better technique than the "cleaning" method inflicted on those unfortunate formerly NOS 7591s, earlier in the year, listed on Craig's List...
It would be a simple matter to insert a blue (or other color LED, and a resistor, and connect it actoss the 5V (pins 1 and 4) on the exposed board. BTW, some thumb drives have an "activity LED" already mounted on the PC board. The RTV goopie would diffues the LED's light for an interesting optical effect.

I imagine you could hook up some sort of LED to the voltage from the USB.
