I don't think that the russian/chinese manufacturers of today are so much more sophisticated. It is hard to imagine starting something up like that again. It is SO labor intensive.

Wow, no breathing protection, no hearing protection, no safety glasses (except for the guy with the molten glass), hands right there in the the machines... I remember working in those conditions.
The ending was sad. They expected that growth to go on forever. Right before transistors and integrated circuits wiped them out. 6,200 jobs.
