I just tried out a couple of new soldering tools that I am very happy with so I thought I would share.
The first is a "solder fume filter". Its not really intended for solder fumes, but when I compared it to other commercial products it seems to be similar. Essentially, its a carbon filter and fan. I got mine at Home Depot for $15 and its called the FebrezeŽ True AirŽ All Purpose Odor Eliminator. Its intended to be plugged into an outlet, but I connected mine to an extension cord and placed it right next to where I was soldering. It easily sucked up all the smoke and I didn't inhale any of it.
The next thing I tried was Liquid Flux and a Flux Bottle. I've been using rosin core solder for around 10 years now and have never had any issues, but after seeing someone use this flux in an instructional video I decided to try it out. I was surprised how easily the solder flowed.
Finally, I got a Alcohol Dispensing Pump Bottle for cleaning flux residue. I've used alcohol on swabs before, but never really liked how the fine cotton threads would get stuck on the leads. Using this dispenser and an acid brush made clean up much easier.
I have a friend who did electronics in the Navy and he said these things were standard issue, but I never knew about them before. I hope by posting someone else can benefit. I don't think I will solder without them again.
Oh, and in case you don't have one, buy a soldering station like the Hakko 936. Best purchase I ever made for building kits.
Thanks.
I didn't realize the Febreze would work for solder fumes. At under $20, it's a no brainer.
Triamp... Take a load off!
