I have a pair of Paramour 1's I bought around 1999 for $399. I love the things, they have been on at least 8 hours a day for the last 4 years, and got quite a bit of use prior to that. They are still rock solid. Had to replace the 2a3's due to one of the valve art's taking a dump. Running EH's now, and love it. Just a great amp. I have Pi stage 4's, and I have lost all desire to upgrade. It's crazy, I'm completely content. I geuss I'm paying my respects to a great amp!

I'm listening to 2A3C's in my Paramour I as I sit here, modded with special cap cocktail (tin/teflon mix then polypro in oil), and the 2A3C is a beaut.Had a couple of musician friends over past week, and they wouldn't believe their ears.
BTW, the driver tube is very crucial as well, and I do love the old Sylvania triple mica black plates.

Jon,
Aren't the Shuguang higher priced 2A3s? And what caps are you using where?
Thanks,
P.S. My favorite 76 drivers are Philco and Sylvania.

There Is Only One (Grainger Morrison, it seems)
After literally trying dozens of cap combos, including $$$ pure teflons, I prefer the current combo with Sylvania 12AT7 TM BP + Shuguang 2A3C.Coupling: 0.22uF Audiocap theta bypassed with 220 pF Russian FT-1 Teflon cap
Parafeed: Siemens MKV polyproylene/metalissed aluminium/in oil (unfortunately no longer made). Very similar equivalent is
Epcos (Siemens Matsushita) MKV B25834 polypropylene in oil capacitor, which is difficult to obtain in U.S.http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/index.php?topic=54218.100
Mundorf silver in oil (large ones) is a decent sub for above..

Dunno what is expensive and what is not, but I have provided a link. Hope it helps.
Cheers
P.S. Nice group over here :)
I'm bookmarking it.

Looks like you bought one of the first Paramours (just my guess). I bought one of the last ones before the II was released. Looks like bookends!
I've had mine a little less than 3 years and have replaced caps, changed the driver to a 76, upgraded the iron, put ferrites on the hot leg and maybe something else, can't remember.
The only thing I haven't tried is replacing the output tubes. I really want to get a pair, or try a pair, of RCA Blackplates.
But the cost and PITA of finding them has kept me from doing it.
So.... is there a new tube that anywhere approaches the RCA?
TIA!

the answer is yes, but like the good Californian wines that really compete with French, they cost about the same. The 2A3C is an excellent new tube. Since I've got them, I've only rolled in the old a few times, and even tho the older ones might be a little better with some types of music, I'm happy with leaving the 2A3C's in all the time and just forgetting about them.
Doc posted that the Paramour was a cheap way to get into the SET sound.
The S.E.X. kit does that role nicely.
.
Directly Heated Single Ended Experimenter's kit. You could even use Hot S.E.X.
