A couple years ago I met Terry Cain, and heard his great speakers. I recently inquired about him of Stephaen, a 6moons Audio Reviewer, and this is the following is the response that I got. I hope to do good, and not ill by copying it here."Hi guys,
I'm writing because Terry has finally asked/agreed to allow 6moons and the Asylum to jointly publicize his needs and attempt to raise money for his care. He has a dual diagnosis of ALS and Lyme's. Because he has been unable to work, he sold his business to one of his trusted workers and he and Leslie are now scraping by as there is no consistent income for them.
Terry is now fighting for his life. He currently requires 'round the clock care and wants to prsue a non-traditional treatment for the Lyme's, based on the two years of research he's been doing. Over a six month period, the cost for the treatment alone is expected to exceed $12,000. next week he will be moved to a small group home where there is full-time medical attention available and begin to pursue the aggressive treatment he believes will save his life. Because the treatment is non-traditional, he is not eligible to receive any state or federal assistance.
I'm writing to you because I can't do this by myself and Terry needs our help.
Some quick points and then I'll sign off and hope to hear back from you.1. 6moons and AA are willing to do what it takes to raise awareness of the need.
2. AA has an established classifieds section which could be used to list items in the auction; I believe we have the means to keep them at the top of the list. I don't know if AuidioGon will partner with us, yet.
3. While I've provided oversight to the 9/11 and Tsunami benefists on AA, I never coordinated any of the "on the gound" auction activities (getting donations, listing the items, mangaging the transactions).
4. Pete Riggle was the first to step up and has already agreed to donate numerous Pete Riggle Engineering and Audio products to the cause.
5. Leslie, and Terry's cousin Kathy, will work on the story, which Srajan and I will then craft into an appeal...I hope to have this available to go live by the end of this week
6. Terry's limited communication abilities (the last time I heard him speak7. Time is of the essence. So...what insights, insults, comments, question, advice, support, etc can you offer?
I know that ALL of you have various talents, connections, or clout.
And I know that all of you appreciate Terry as a friend and/or contributor to the field.
In short, the best ideas come from the most ideas, and the best results will come from many hands on deck. Thanks!
ae"
Anyway, perhaps I should have asked permission first, and maybe everyone already knows. I just thought this forum was the best place on earth to make this known. Stephaen can be reached at
stephaen@6moons.comSincerely,
Follow Ups:
As I have a little time on my hands, I decided to start the ball rolling for Terry with a fundraiser. I do not have a website, or some of the other things possible (photo)or suggested by their organization, but hopefully someone else can assist/followup with the bells and whistles.
You may go to fundable.org and type in Friends of Terry Cain. This should get you to the pledge page, where I have initially set up a pledge fund. I set the initial pledge total low at $2000, as suggested, with the ability to collect as much as we can raise than . You may pledge with Paypal or credit card.
Please help out by posting this info on other sites so that we may reach as many Friends of Terry Cain as we can. Thanks, Mike

Thanks, Mike, that is a truly a compassionate effort! I just got an e-mail from Stephaen this morning, saying that Srajan has set up a page for contributions to Terry's cause as well.
![]()
And a wonderful thing! Their effort will raise some serious $$$ for Terry. I did not know that completed setting up the webpage, or I would have just donated there...BUT...nothing says I cannot donate to two different funds, eh???
But I hope that the Friends of Terry Cain Fundraiser gets enough support to meet it's minimum $$$ target....

We just pushed the go button at 8 or so this morning, so the word has
yet to really get out.Two things, if I may:
1) If anyone wants a jpg of the banner to put on their webpage as a
click through, please contact me with details of where it will go and
how it will be used. We need to track that.
2) Srajan is travelling until Tuesday, so I'm continuing to beat the
bushes and compile the needed info on products to be listed upon his
return. We fretted over whether to wait until Tuesday when Srajan returns and
can update the listings, but decided to go live today. We hope that the
current list will inspire others to want to be a part of this. There are currently more than $47,000 pledged based on the sale of
the 37 items listed. The list will grow next week as the offerings
from other manufacturers begin to surface. And, yes, THANK YOU for YOUR efforts!

I am very saddened to hear of Terry's decline. I would like to relate
a personal story in regard to Lymne Disease.I have a niece in the Santa Rosa, Ca. area that was diagnosed with Lymne disease 4 years ago. She has the Sonoma county (Ca.) strain of the Lyme bacteria.
At the time of her diagnosis, I had little knowledge of Lymne disease, and like many, didn't realize just how terrible the disease is. My niece was in graduate School when she started having unexplained symptoms, including but not limited to incredibly severe, disabling headaches. Due to the illusive nature of Lymne disease, much time was wasted before someone finally thought to do a test for Lyme, resulting in the diagnosis. Treatment for Lyme disease was begun, but over time they discovered she had at least three nasty tick-borne co-infections. Treatment for the Lyme bacteria has been suspended at times, in order to address these other co-infections, which the Lyme disease can mask. Currently she is receiving treatment for the Lyme bacteria but not the "treatment of choice" for it, because at present the major focus of her treatment is on a very serious co-infection known as babesia. Babesia are a type of parasite that live in the red blood cells, and this conditions appears very difficult to reach/treat. The symptoms for Lyme disease and the various tick-borne co-infections that often accompany it vary from person to person, which makes it much harder to diagnose and treat. My niece is still very sick. She had a pic line installed for the daily IV infusion of drugs. Eventually she had some problems with the pic line and had to have a tunnel catheter surgically installed for the drug administration. She is on such a massive ammount of medication that her parents, who are the caregivers, spend approximately two hours a day filling the syringes that are used to administer the various meds to her during the day.
I won't go into further details of her condition, but believe me when I tell you Lymne's Disease (i.e., when not caught immediately after the tickbite and treated) is devasting. The Lyme bacteria itself may not kill the patient, but some of the coinfections surely can if untreated. And both the Lyme bacteria and co-infections that can accompany it are extremely difficult to irradicate when they become neurological and cross the brain barrier, as in my neice's case. She remains very sick and still has not turned the corner in her battle, but she is wonderfully brave and we all pray that soon she will start seeing improvement.
I recently heard about a client's son, who also lives in the Napa
area (near Sonoma county) that has also been diagnosed with Lymne's, and this makes me believe that Lynme Disease is much more prevalent than is generally suspected. My sister-in-law believes that cases in the Napa area likely are not all accounted for because of pressure from tourism industry.
If you don't know, Lymne Disease is transmitted through the bite of a
tick--usually a deer tick, which is quite small, about the size of a pencil point. At least 50 percent of the time, a red, bull's eye rash will appear around the site of the tick bite: if this happens, immediate treatement with antibiotics will kill the Lyme bacteia. The big problem is if there's no rash at the site of the bite, or there is a rash but it's in the scalp or another area that makes it not readily visible: in these instances, no one knows to seek treatment.
...by posting. Like Doc, a number of us NW region oddiophools have known about Terry's condition for some time, but as Terry and his wife chose not to make it public, we had to respect their privacy. Now that Terry has agreed to Stephaen and others helping, the more we publicize in audio forums, the better. I'll look and see if anything is on the Decware forum yet.

I didn't know Terry personally but its a very sad thing to hear.
I have a fair amount of experience in fundraising for conservation initiatives but the same principles apply. Here are some thoughts:
1.) As suggested, set up accounts for donations, including PayPal. Also consider establishing a Charitable Trust Foundation for tax purposes (for Terry's family AND tax deductability for contributors)...there are state and federal laws that must be met to do this. This also allows the family to write off certain expenses against the monies accumulated in the Trust (eg. travel for treatment, drugs, other health related costs, etc.)
2.) Auction off speakers and other audio equipment on line or at certain predetermined events with proceeds or a portion thereof going to a foundation set up for Terry. Perhaps even through Ebay or Audiogon.
3.) Sympatheitc manufacturers and retailers (Eg. those handling Caine and Caine equipment) can offer to contribute x % of their proceeds from the sale of equipment to Terry's Foundtion for tax considerations.
3.) Hold a cyber-raffle in which minimum donations are made by participants, participants are issued tickets, and tickets are drawn for prizes.
4.) Contact major audio media (magazines, websites, local newspapers etc.) to post stories and solicit contributions to an established Fund.
5.) Distribute notice to Audio Asylum and other website members OR place front page ads on same in which solicitations are made for contributions.
6.) Hold a Pacific Northwest DIY symposium with a portion of the benefits going to the established Foundation. There are probably a lot of folks clammering for such a symposium anyway!
7.) Perhaps contact CES and RMAF 2007 to see if they'd be willing to solicit donations at an established booth with pictures and a story about Terry.
Thant's a quick list. If you need more suggestions let me know.

...then I and others can easily contribute
I will help by donating my art prints for auction/sale. Whoever ends up incharge of the sale or auction can reach me by email.
Either way....

Wanting to hear Cain and Cain speakers, and not having a dealer close by, I decided to take a quick road trip from Santa Rosa, CA to Terry's factory in Walla Walla. Terry met me on saturday in his shop, and graciously spent a few hours with me listening to his speakers. His wife Leslie stopped by, and even though they had dinner plans with friends, they graciously invited me to dinner with them. I went, and we all had a very pleasant evening. Terry again met me at his shop on Sunday, and I got to listen a little more before I hit the road home. I ended up ordering Single Horn Bens and a Bailey subwoofer about a week or so later. I was really touched by how Terry and Leslie went out of their way to make me feel welcome and a friend. We kept in touch for some months later, my mailing him CD's of some of my favorite music, and our emailing back and forth on a regular basis. Finally, he stopped responding to my emails. I was then diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia, and went into the hospital for chemotherpy. After regaining some strength at home, I called C&C to find out what was up with Terry, and was told the bad news.
Terry Cain is one of the really good guys. I think it is just wonderful that I am seeing so much willingness to help Terry out. Yes, medical assistance is atrociously expensive. Thank God for insurance. Most of my 38 day hospital stay was covered by insurance, and if I end up getting a stem cell transplant, that 250K to 1M expense will be taken care of. If someone can put together a fund for Terry, I will donate. If we can put together an auction to raise money, count me in...

Sorry to hear about you medical situation. This might be something
that you would like to check out from Geron:Geron Current Clinical Trial
Please monitor this page for updates on future clinical trials for GRNVAC1.
Telomerase Inhibitor (GRN163L)
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
We have initiated a Phase I/II, dose-escalation trial of GRN163L in patients with advanced chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The trial is primarily designed to demonstrate the safety and tolerability of GRN163L administered intravenously on a weekly basis. Importantly, CLL also provides a unique opportunity to measure both the magnitude and time course of telomerase inhibition in tumor cells achieved at various doses of GRN163L. By serially assessing the effects of the drug on the target enzyme in CLL cells, insights will be gained regarding the dose and dosing interval that optimally inhibits telomerase activity in the tumor. In this way, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters can be correlated with any observed reduction in patients’ tumor burden.
This trial is open for patient enrollment at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, North Shore University Hospital, Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and The Ohio State University Medical Center.
For information about eligibility to participate in this trial, CLL patients should please call:

We have also initiated a trial of GRN163L in patients with solid tumor malignancies. This Phase I, dose-escalation trial of GRN163L is primarily designed to demonstrate the safety and tolerability of GRN163L administered intravenously (IV) on a weekly basis in patients with refractory or relapsed solid tumor malignancies. This study will also evaluate the tolerability of IV infusion of GRN163L at various rates of administration, and enable an assessment of the pharmacokinetic profile of GRN163L at escalating doses and at decreasing infusion durations. A secondary endpoint of the trial is the preliminary evaluation of anti-tumor activity of GRN163L in this patient population.
This trial is open for patient enrollment at The University of Chicago Medical Center.
For information about eligibility to participate in this trial, solid tumor patients should please call:
The University of Chicago Medical Center

Thank you for the information on CLL. My doctors at Santa Rosa Kaiser, consulting with Dr. Negrin (chief of oncology) at Stanford Medical finally reached consensus diagnosis of AML (acute myelogenous leukemia) with underlying CMML (chronic myelomonocytic leukemia). If you have info on west coast clinical trials for AML/CMML, your posting would be appreciated...Thanks, Mike

Thanks! We'll look forward to your contribution.• A trust fund should be set up by next week.
• A benefit will go live on 6moons.com in the next two weeks (there is a
lot of behind the scenes prep that needs to happen for a grand kickoff).
• We already have $15,000 in proceeds pledged (assuming the $30,000
in gear to be listed is sold).
• This will not be an auction , but there will be three ways to help:
1) Make a direct cash donation to support Terry and his wife Leslie in
their fight for Terry's life.
2) Buy new or used equipment for a reduced fixed price where the seller
pledges a clearly marked percentage of your purchase price to Terry's
account.
3) Offer new or used equipment where you as the seller pledge a clearly
marked percentage of the price to Terry.Manufacturers/end users wanting to make equipment available can be
added to the list as they come forward. The moment they e-mail us that
they've gotten a purchase commitment, we'll do the same, affix
"pending" on the item/s until the manufacturer confirms receipt of
monies and the status changes to "sold." If it's a credit card or
paypal transaction, it can go to sold right away. The seller then is
responsible for forwarding the agreed-upon percentage (between 25 and
100) to Terry's trust. For example, say XYZ Audio offered to sell 5 amps at 30% off retail and
made the 20% above dealer cost (or build cost even) to Terry. There's
no need for any bidding. There's 5 amps at a good fixed price and when
they're gone, they're gone. If it's one amp, it's up to the interested
parties to beat the other prospective buyers with a phone call to XYZ.We don't want to manage/host/supervise bidding wars and all that
nonsense. And, we'd rather not set this thing up as a big exposure op -
though just mentioning that Krell donated an FBI amp or this or that
company this or that is already a nice feather in their cap.Terry will know who the people are by the names that'll be on the bank
statements and checks. That should be all the givers should want - not
having their names in blinking letters publicized on 6moons.People or companies who wish to pledge new or used gear should contact
me at stephaen at audioasylum dot comPeople who want to contribute directly to the fund, please sit tight.
We'll make the trust fund deposit details avaiable as soon as possible. Many thanks to Srajan at 6moons for his willingness to actively host
the benefit.

This is really sad to hear. I only recently became aware of Terry Cain and his speakers- I look forward to getting a pair of Abby's.It's strange to know of someone based only on thier reputation but it's like ya know the guy in some small way.
It's like when Chris Haedt passed away. I had been planning to send him my tube tester and didn't get around to it then- hear more sad news.
As soon as things are finalized I'll contribute in some way.
Has there been a fund setup or a PayPal account for him?

of the fastest and easiest things to do. That way donations can be done quickly without having to wait for the AA and 6moons campaign to take off. I will also make an article in my DIYMAG to attract attention to Terry's situation. Here's to hoping the alternative treatment works!!!
To infinity and beyond!!!

Fundable.org is the way to go and integrates with
Paypal too. This is a very nifty tool that WORKS just for this
type of thing. I've used it before for another Forum
I help Moderate on to raise money for that site.NPR has done a program on this, it's a really nice
and powerful way for average folks to raise money.
Let's take a look into this...(please)!Andrew

I have been aware of this situation for some time. Let me cogitate on this a bit and see what we can come up with to help.

Hi Dan (and others),Srajan and I have put together a basic plan.
The 6moons benefit page won't go live for a few days as
I want to firm up some pacesetting contributions first.A forum to promote timely communication
regarding the benefit will go live on AA today.Had a nice chat with your bride. Sweet as ever.
Got some good advice from Paul, too. Thanks!
