Hi again.OK, so primarily I am looking forward to the single ended kit as a headphone amp.
But suppose one day I don't want to wear cans, or sit with my head sandwiched between my Thiels.
If this topic has been addressed recently, please just direct me to the thread, but I would like to know what people are using for speakers with this tiny titan. Interested in something as full range as possible, with a moderate footprint (I think Cornwalls would be too big) and a good WAF score.
ALSO, had the pleasure of speaking to the man himself today (Doc B) and when pressed with questions about the speaker kit, he divulged that it will probably be a mid woofer with a slot loaded horn (I think). The thing is, it will be rolling off around 125 Hz so it is destined to be mated with stereo subs.
Anyone have any experience with the Dayton subs?
Are there used bargains out there that are cheaper than the REL Storm/Stratus I keep hearing about (but not hearing, unfortunately)?

With just a hint of modesty - check out the LP#9's - my SEX does a respectable job (with no BSC though).http://hudlyaudio.blogspot.com

If you are willing to DIY, I'd take a look at Ron Clarke's Dallas II (Fostex FE206E) and Austin rev G (FE166E) rear-loaded designs. They are reasonably-sized, and I believe would get you low enough to use a single sub, or no sub at all depending. PDF files are available at the link. They've gotten a lot of positive feedback from builders.

The iron law of speakers is, they can't be efficient, small, and have deep bass. You need efficiency with a 2-watt amp (unless you like really quiet music) - I recommend 99dB or greater sensitivity, though many will be OK with 96dB. So you will have either limited bass or a huge speaker. That's the point of the SEXy Speaker - it's small, has no bass, and needs a sub. In fact, the bass rolls off so high, you really should have two subs - they are no longer subwoofers, they are woofers, plain and simple.
In my current system, I have 101dB speakers that are about 3 cubic feet each and go down to maybe 70Hz. (It's a vintage mishmash, JBL 2220 and 2440, Barzilay cabinet, homebrew crossover.) After we developed the SEXy, I took the subs home and they make a real improvement. Pretty funny, a 10 inch subwoofer with a 15 inch bass/midrange!
To be honest though, we do development listening on Doc's system, heavily modified Straight Eights with a good sub. Mine does not have enough resolution.
Some of the fullrange/back horn systems are not too awfully huge. They will have lumpy bass due to the small horn mouth, but most rooms impose lumpy bass anyhow - with the right positioning and a fortuitous combination of lumps it can work better than you'd think. Because of the room dependence, I'd encourage anyone to try before you buy if at all possible.

"Bass Is Unidirectional, it doesn't have to be centered."That is the thought about SUB - woofers. I once had a sub mid wall of the left wall of my listening room (as I looked at the speakers). The bass came from the center.
What PJ is saying is that the crossover is high enough that you WILL hear right and left, so right and left subs are in order. Otherwise you will get directional queues from a single sub.
Just thought a small clarification was in order if you weren't aware of the beginings of the whole "Mono" sub thing.

that at a high enough frequency, your sub becomes a dom?

at a high enough frequency a sub-woofer becomse a woofer. And Woofers are directional.I own music that has the bass guitar or bass in the right or left channel. A sub-woofer crosses over low enough that you get the sound of the bass in whichever speaker it is supposed to be in. But...if you cross the sub over too high, as PJ points out, that shoud comes from the sub. And then you need a sub next to each "full range" speaker.
Does that make sense?

Dom.... Sub..... think latex.

I didn't tell a joke, what is this in reference to?

Just found the SEX Speaker Roll Call from July 2006, which helps.
Still need advice on some versatile subs though.

These "Mini-VOTs" (Mini Voice Of the Theater) I have built up are way high on the sonic factors, but fall way low on WAF (Yeah, these cabs are almost as ugly as a bucket full of squirming toads).
This particular one is getting a test run down in the cellar, and the acoustic coupling to the concrete floor does wonders for the LF response! These are HB "Karlson" cabs that someone built about 40 years ago, I found 'em at the local dump, installed 12" Pyle PYM1298 drivers (same as Eminence Kappa-12) and the horns are vintage 33 year old Altec 811B horn, with 806-8A compression drivers and N801-8A crossovers (800 Hz).
Originally, Karlsons were designed to use a coaxial or full-range speaker, and they had issues with harshness or "shoutiness" of sound quality, I found that crossing out the internal speaker around 800-1000 Hz and then using a top-mounted HF driver solves this problem in a very good way. Unlike conventional speaker design wisdom dictates, the insides of the cabs have no acoustic padding or stuffing, and in fact, are hard-coated with an epoxy resin in order to increase the internal reflections. The inner speaker baffle and slotted vents are mounted at an angle, this helps eliminate most standing wave resonances. Material is all 3/4 or 1 inch marine grade plywood and the back cover is particle board, also hard-coated on the inner surface. Tight fit and tolerances are essential, and yes, these puppies are HEAVY! Definitely all eight woofer mounting screws are needed (and I used the nylon-insert #10 locknuts), don't cheat and try to get by with only four...
The SPL is about 98-99 dB/W/M and they sound very good, and the bass extension is amazing - no subs are needed. At 2WPC these are quite loud, with 10-20 WPC they can cause threshold of pain SPLs and at 35-70 WPC they almost become sonic "weapons". I've run 'em with everything from the SEX amp, to a HB 6EM7 PP 10WPC amp, to Dynaco ST35 and ST70 and some 75WPC HB KT88 monoblocks I built up a few years ago. 75WPC is getting pretty close to putting the compression drivers at risk, so I don't run them too hard with that kind of power.
SEXY? Both yes and no at the same time ;-)>
