we had a great time, even though there were only a handful of us.big thanks to my wife Jenny for putting up with us while we had our fun and she had to work.
thanks also to randy willis for coming by to show us how to work the reel to reel and giving good company for the parts of the meet that he was able to attend.
welcome to my friend mark to the bottlehead community; he's already sniffing for sex upgrades and maybe a fpIII, as well as to hear some paramounts.
we commandeered the living room for 4 days for the purposes of putting together a SEX headphone amp (the construction pics posted later), throwing back some suds, and trying out our collective gear in different arrangements.
the favorite sounds of the weekend came through biamped straight 8's with the newly completed SEX on the tweeters, and a pair of channel island vmb-1 monoblocks on the woofers with attenuation on both to make the amps' volume comparable, as well as to give us the tone we were looking for (i think we were itchy to biamp something with all of the amps we had laying around, but the result sounded very nice).
all in all a great weekend.
enjoy the pics,
dennis

Dennis,
I wanted to publicly thank you for having me in your home during the recent "buttock bobblehead" meeting. You and your wife Jenny certainly are gracious people- opening up your home to me,someone who you only knew as a "stereo nut", and then making me feel welcome was indeed kind of you both (especially since I am close to 25+ years older than you. In fact,I am listening to equipment that I have used since before you were born!).I think that an important part of this "hobby" is about sharing our love of music and our passion for the type of great equipment that helps us better appreciate that music- it knows no age boundary.
Jenny is such a sweet young lady, and very patient, even when we proceeded to upend her entire living room for the equipment! Your friend Mark was a great guy and I enjoyed meeting him, too. You two guys are very convincing Bottlehead advocates. I know I came away with a high regard for the sonics of Doc's equipment. Very good stuff!
Looks like you guys had a gas. BTW, Heineken cans will sound way better than Bud.

It appears you have these also. Are they what came in the kit? Apparently, they're some kind of treat. Doc sent some to me with my kit, in boxes..... thanks doc

yeah, those came with the kit. i was pumped to see them after reading previous posts about how good they sounded, although i don't really have a frame of reference on the other 6dn7's.

Mt SEXamp was equipped with standard base GEs, and I have recently obtained some coin-base 6DN7s which I'll try out, perhaps after the iron / cap / C4S upgrades are completed.BK-16s are on the way...
How did they work out for you?
i picked those up at a garage sale for 20 bucks over the summer, and refinished the cabs so that they looked decent in the living room.as far as sound, they definitely have some dips in their frequency response (from listening to music with a ranging bassline). this may be from the previous owner's use, who told me that i'd better have a huge amp ("one of them systems that's not all put together in one piece [best buy]") to drive them because they can really shake the walls down.
needless to say, i'm sure they're not in prime working condition, and when i get some time i'll try to get some info off the speaker forum and go through them to see what the deal is.
any suggestions on the "proper" way to repair a rip (not a hole) in a woofer cone would be most helpful, as well as any suggestions on how to give them a shakedown would be most helpful.
thanks,
dennis
Dennis,I use Heresey's but I paid a heck of a lot more than 20 bucks! Mine are from the mid-70's; the birch plywood had never been finished and it showed.
They also were pretty thin. They're just boxes with speakers. Rapping on their sides was not impressive--rang like a bell. So, I modded them:
Wrapped the mid-range horn in Parts Express low-end Dynamat stuff.
Layed the same stuff on the inside panels.
Braced the side panels.
Stuffed them with dacron fill (loosely but filled the cabinets).
Replaced the rear baffles with 3/4" MDF baffles.
Installed gold-plated wire lugs.Rapping on the sides of them now is almost like rapping on a slab of concrete. They sound much, much better.
Last week I got them off the floor by making some 7" tall speaker stands out of 4x4 posts (got the wood as culls from Home Depot for 51 cents) and 1 1/4" wood dowels to connect the posts together. Really helped tighten the bass.

Looks like a good time! Sorry I wasn't able to come, but work has been a real bi#%^ lately and there was no way I was getting away. Definitely have to come to Lubbock sometime.

email me when a good weekend for you pops up, and i'll put something together. its not hard to rally the troops when the ranks are so thin.
