Hi, I know I posted a similar post in SET forum. But last night I found the kit2 website and I found out about this forum, I hope it is okay to re-post it here. I apologize if I shouldn't do this.My speakers is a pair of Von Schweikert VR-1 (89db/8ohm) and in a mid size room (about 20x12).
I am using a AES AE-25 amp now (20 watts/ch kt88 based push pull amp). Prior to it I owned a Sophia Baby amp (10 watts/ch 6P1T based push pull amp). The Sophia Baby is awesome in vocal/jazz, but for orchestra, it seems it is underpower to drive my speakers. So I switched to the AES AE-25. The AES is open and dynamic, but it lacks the sweet midrange of the Sophia.
So now I am on the quest to find a right amp that can do well in both orchestra and jazz/vocal, do you think the kit2 is right for me?
My cd-player is an Eastsound CD-E5, I also have a dack 1.2d. Which one will match the kit2 better?
Follow Ups:
I have just put togather a Kit 2 w/ the AN-V upgrade (the Black Gates on the tag strip are standard) a couple of months ago. I use it to drive a pair of QUAD 77-10L bookshelf (~86-88dB efficiency into 8 ohms... I couldn't quite remember the exact rating at the moment) in my wife's den/guest room and both of us love the results at the end! My wife listens to lieders, choral works, arias, etc. till late into the night everyday now! Vocal sounds very nature and there is no harshness with the high (e.g. soprano). Piano sound right on the Kit2. And, this is just with the stock tubes included in the kit! I have tried a couple of Philips OS 6550s but I don't like how it sound with the Kit2: everything sounds thin and distance to me... but then it could be the tubes are just at the end of their life (they are from an ARC D90 that I used to have). I would like to try it on my main system with my QUAD ESL63 USA Monitors but I don't think my lovely wife will let me get it back :-)It doesn't seem to be lack of power. That said, I would not use it to drive something as inefficient as a pair of ATC or Dynaudio.

I recently completed a Kit2... awesome amp but I have not tried it on 89db speakers.. mine are around 95. You could have a problem with headroom on very dynamic music. H That said, my 300bs did quite well with Audio Physic Virgo IIIs.

I use a kit 2. I use it on 88db Meadowlarks and it has loads of power to drive them, so you should be fine. The kit2 is very dynamic and fast, and is well extended on both ends (surprisingly so at the bottom for a tube amp). It doesn’t do bass like a mega wpc Krell, but it does deliver in spades when called upon. The midrange is seductive and detailed. Leading edges especially are both smooth and apparent.
It really does everything well without being boring. It demands your attention when you play.
I listen mostly to jazz, folk and rock and am very happy with the kit2

My Kit2 plays into the Kit02 speakers, which are about 94db, but I have to agree with my friends here that it never seems to lack power on anything. I find the Kit2 is highly customizeable with tubes. After a lot of playing around, I've settled on what *I* think is a perfect instrumental jazz set up, which excels in bass, piano, trumpet and sax, and gives spine-tingling brushes and snare. I use a Sylvania 'Chrome Top' 6SN7, a pair of Sylvania 12AX7WAs, a Tung Sol 5U4GB and a pair of Shuguang / Penta Labs GEKT88s. I've tried OS Tung Sol 6550s, but they were too warm for me (I have 4 of them - contact for trades!) and GE 6550As, which I found too boomy.
