Bob, that's a really good point. I forgot to metion the room, which has the greatest potential to effect the balance of the two speakers. A piece of furniture on either side of the room could effect channel matching, not to mention room shape irregularities (L-shape rooms n such).
I know- my "listening room" is my living/dinnig/kitchen artea of my condo. Not ideal but with some treatment acceptable

There is a difference between them. Finished speakers are matched across their whole frequency range using a number of mics in a controlled environment using custom written analysis software. To emulate this at home would be very difficult unless you have access to this sort of test gear and have a pair of reference speakers.I have heard kit speakers and they are fine. The best thing I can suggest is if one speaker is bassier then use that on the right as this will give better bass reproduction of orchestras - which everything uses from pop to film thesedays.
