A friend has an idler wheel Rek-O-Kut with SME arm and Grado Platinum cart in a heavy plywood plinth that is bass city!

Follow Ups:
So far I have removed the rubber feet and bottom board, replaing the feet with low profile goldmund cone. I also lowered the suspension to 4mm from 5mm (platter to plinth clearance). Things have improved (sigh of relief).

Is it still the Pro-ject? I'd say that's where your problem lies. Since you're on this forum, check out the phono preamp kit here. It's AWESOME.

Oh yeah the old Project Phono, sorry, I just updated my system. So the new phono kit is that much better than the phono stages in the AN preamps?

Peter has said publicly that the new Phono Kit with all the upgrades is a viable alternative to the superb M3 phono stage. Pretty impressive in my book!
Vik,Can you flesh this out a bit? Did he make this claim somewhere on the asylum? Thanks.

Can't realy recall if it was on the asylum or in an email to me. I can look for it if you'd like. He never said that it was better than the M3 just a viable sonic alternative.
I did an AA search before my earlier post and came up empty. I wouldn't expect to hear it's better than the M3—PQ isn't going to have the kits outdoing his assembled pieces. I just wondered how he might have phrased the comparison. . .how close he thought the kit came to the M3. . .if he suggested some sort of heirarchy within the various stages? For example, if he made comps to the M3, it might imply that the kit stage betters the one found in the M2. Useful information if that's the case.I suppose I could email him directly, but I imagine he's already inundated with duplicate queries on just this sort of thing. So, if you can dig up the information, you'll have my gratitude and probably PQ's as well.

Here is the email correspondence:Vik:
The phono stage in my M3 Phono has been the best I have ever used. I am
wondering whether the new Audio Note Kits Phono Stage (Signature) is
superior to the phono stage in my M3 Phono?
PQ responds:
Whether it is better or worse than the new kit is an excellent question,
probably no if the parts were maxed out, but then one could do that to the
M3Phono stage as well, I would say they may be on par with each other.
See, I wasn't fibbing :-)
Thanks for sharing.I have to say, though, that his response is a bit unclear. Replacing his '...no if ' with '...not, unless' or with '...only if' makes far more sense to me.
His final statement is clear enough and suggests to me that he ranks the kit stage ahead of the M2 version. That's what I was trying to get at all along.
Like I originlly suggested, email Peter if you are still confused.
No need, Vik. I reread Peter's message and now I get his meaning. Sometimes I'm a wee bit slow on the uptake. . . .

I am sorry to be so dense, but what are you referring to?
