I just picked up and M3a.
I can not find the Hi/Lo gain switch or the Cap Bypass switch.
Where are the switches located on the circuit board ?
Thanks,
Ross
Follow Ups:
The M3 has Bourns conductive plastic attenuators. M3A has Elma stepped attenuators.
The two pots track differently.
I have 4 dip switches, 2 per side, with 2 positions for each switch. All switches are labeled on-off for hi-lo gain. Appears I do not have cap bypass switches. In addition, I do not have ceramic tube sockets.
My switches are located just to the right of center, towards the back of the circuit board. They are small, and were more visible in stronger light...
At hi gain, acceptable volume is about 12:00. There is a significant gain difference between the M3 and M3A. Listening level in my M3 is about 9:30-10:00.
Thanks,
Ross
Sorry. A call or email to AI is in order then. Lots of good info on their site too. I would prefer the gain settings where 12 oclock was good over 9. Good FAQs on AI'sa page regarding lots of stuff. Good luck.

But I don't understand you not finding them, they are right next to the line stage tubes the logical place they would be. I guess you are looking for a slide switch but they are DIP switches. Join hi-fi engine and download the manual free. All is explained. Manual good. Google is friend.

mine only have two switches each. Bypass but no gain - sadly

Must have been an early run. Dip switch right? Gain and cap bypass all in the same DIP.

And it shows in the manual - 2004- not "that" early is it?

No they started making that in about 96 I think. Based on the OP's reply and yours it seems things were variable......

"2004" is printed on a tag inside

yes i saw you said that. i guess they made unpublished changes. did you buy it new or might it have been modded before you got it?

but no indication that it had been modded - would make no sense either.Replaced a 3 bought new

It's a well known fact.
They also serve to better ground you in the event you're foolish enough to float your equipment's ground. [nudge nudge, wink wink]
You have em Merry Christmas too, Kemosabe!
I float all 5 of my ham shack antennas. Ayres Hansen said safety ground is a noise antenna. McGowan of PS audio told me to lift the P-300 safety ground. Big improvement.
