Interesting as these were never sold to the consumer market.
They were based on the 303 power amp circuitry but with a transformer coupled output. Many were purchased by the BBC where you could find them on the amplifier shelf that was part of the LS5/8 speaker support.
I came across a whole pile of them being disposed of from a major London studio back in the late 1970s. Also for the chop was a pair of Tannoy GRF Autographs. I still kick myself for not making an offer.
Follow Ups:
Actually the LS5/8 mainly used special Quad 405 amps with built in electronic crossovers and reduced power from the tweeter amp. I had a pair for about a month and wrote a review for Stereophile.
I am sure that you are correct. The 405 came out in 1975 and the BBC monitors I was thinking of were seen by me in around 1972. So I assume that , in fact, they may have been the LS5/8's predecessor the LS5/5 ( memory does play tricks).
I think you're correct.
I think you are wrong about the circuit as they came out before the 303 and many lament that they don't use the triplex circuit. They were made for a really long time not sure when they started but I think it was before stereo took over completely and were made until 83! They can be run in balanced mode ( not true balance) and were often chained together over very long distances, and were used in all kinds of industrial set ups hence the weird connectors that can drive a crazy variety of impedences. I got them on ebay many years ago. Most quad people prefer the 303 bridged to use as a monoblock but one guy who owned both went back to the 50e as it had more "slam". I agree but oddly they require a pretty sensitive speaker, 50 watts is probably accurate as almost all manufacturers seem to underrate power, so keep that in mind. Also has a unique output transformer as it has many windings most of which are not used in any particular configuration. This does however mean that you can bi-wire them, which I wish to explore in the future. I also want to hard wire the output to get rid of those weird connectors. I could finance the whole job by selling the connectors and the balancing output transformers. Some guy in England does something that more than doubles the power.
Hey, that's how Jackie Gleason came to own the lost episodes of The Honeymooners. They were literally tossing them in the trash. He actually did a dumpster dive, signed one piece of paper and the rest was history.
I believe the original Star Trek set ended up in that dumpster as well. Some of the stage crew took pieces. Like the hand phaser so their kids could play with them. Yeah, a multi million dollar hand toy.
Same thing happened to Johnny Carson: several of his tapes were destroyed and no one was notified.
Johnny was pissed off to no end... He wanted a chance to buy them or at least get them donated.
Go figure...
And all those western electric tubes that ended up in the trash
