Looking to upgrade my pre amp. Currently using a BAT VK 30. Associated equipment includes mono block VK 60s driving Sonus Faber Electa Amators. Also have 2 REL Stadium subwoofers.
Front end includes SOTA Cosmos 4/SME5/Shelter 501 MK2 and Marantz SA14 CD player.
Adding a Herron VTSP-2 for phono pre amp.
Considering Bat 51SE, Bat 32SE possibly 52SE. Also Audio research Ref 3, Ls17se. Conrad Johnson?
Solid state such as Ayre or Pass x-20?
Follow Ups:
I think that I am going to either stay with BAT, although not sure which one or move to one of the AR pre amps. Am a little concerned that things seemed to have changed at Audio Research after their sale and it is hard to get to talk to someone at AR now. Also I understand repairs tend to be costly.
A speaker change may be coming up next year.
...My fav is Ayre...for a number of reasons ....one is their customer service and another is that they aren't going out of business anytime soon. Still another is their faithfulness to the music sound signature.
IF willing to forgo: Remotes, Multi input switching and incorporating some mediocre/subprime inbuilt Phono contraption.
A simple Stepped attenuator plus RCA's will Unquestionably outsound Most All commercial contraptions. IF you have odd gear with abnormal input requirements.. a simple Autoformer/buffer addition to the attenuator will eliminate those.. permanently
But there won't be many bragging rights as result.
Your choice then :-)
The elctra amator is a good 15 year old design, but you will get a bigger nag for the buck by upgrading speakers
"bang"
Paragon Sound in Ann Arbor Michigan still have a new ARC LS17SE for sale (discontinued) at $2,795. Original price was $5,500. At that price if you don't like it I would think you should be able to sell it without much loss. I have one and love it, especially remote control feature. I have no association with Paragon, never been there, never bought anything from them. But that looks like a great deal and they look like a solid retailer.
Im looking to change just to change. Might get a sound I like better or not. Adding Herron to switch the onboard phono card. Don't think the Herron has enough gain to use it as a pre amp. Considered a SP20 with it's onboard phono but it doesn't have enough gain for my cartridge. Would prefer to have a balanced out as thats what I am using now for my power amps.Would have probably preferred a one box preamp with good phono but I did not find one that seem to fit the bill so I bought a phono preamp and am now looking for just a pre amp. Tend to prefer the old lush tube midrange with a more modern extended high end. Bass not as important as I have two decent powered subs.
Oh, I think you must have meant the Herron VTPH-2 not the VTSP-2.
2nd note;
how do you like the Marantz spinner w/ B.A.T. gear?
Most important, which cabling are you using?
Welcome! drm.
if you are going to stick w/ VK momo amps- stay w/ a VK preamp.
Why not use the Herron Audio VTSP-2 for your preamp also?
why?
No one NEEDS a reason. It is jut there.. to do. One can make up a reason.. But none should be needed.
The "ITCH" can only be scratched with NEW EQUIPMENT.
That is like 'Audiophile 101'.Added: on the other hand.. Ask what he wants to add in a new preamp.. That makes sense.
More clarity. better midrange, XLR, other features.. built in phono...

What divinely sensuous experience is he missing? I'll take his cast-off preamp
Now everybody SWITCH!!!!!!!!!!
