today I saw several amps in a thrift store with a CD input, a phono input and a tuner input. Everything but a pre amp input. How does that work?

If so it was as already posted, an integrated amp. If not, did it have main outputs? If so, you were looking at a preamp.
?
It was can integrated amp then.

that some earlier preamps like the Dyna PAT-5, McIntosh C26, etc. also had speaker terminals for switching purposes.
?
Sounds like (no pun) an integrated amp.
Those sound like integrated amps to me.
Phono pre, line stage and power amp in one chassis.
Do you have any makes and model numbers?

and now why a receiver got it's name. When someone claims they have an amp, how do you know if it is "integrated" or not?
Going back to the 1950s and 60s when hi-fi took off as a hobby, here are the terms generally used:
- power amp: generates power for the speakers, but has no input selector, volume or tone controls. Used with a separate preamp.
- preamp: has a selector to switch between various inputs such as phono, tuner, tape decks, etc. and has a volume control and perhaps balance and tone knobs, but the output is line level only; inadequate to power speakers by itself. Used with a separate power amp.
- integrated amp: combines the two pieces above into a single unit.
- receiver: an integrated amp with a tuner built-in.
This should give you the information you are looking for!

...integrated means an amp supplying power to the speakers combined with a preamp with controls, like volume, and possibly other features.
