I think you will be very happy with the Marantz sound quality, might even find it an improvement.
Manual set up is fairly easy, you have to set it by ear sitting in your usual position unless willing to invest in a SPL meter which does help to get things closer.
I disagree with the rags opinion of Audessey. I think if you give it a try you'll find it does a great job of equalizing the room and sound is better. It typically provides a nice flat response which isn't necessarily to some people's taste. I personally like it. Others like every little sound effect to involve the sub. You should try it at some point though just so you will know for yourself which you prefer.

My Marantz NR1506 is now set up and sounds not very good although as expected we found Audyssey totally useless and had to adjust manually,I do not know how the Marantz power amp section sounds as I only use the pre-out into my more powerful stereo amp. The installer says he does not like the Marantz sound but the pre -amp is fine so is the FM tuner. certainly very good value. I never use a sub.

Regret I have made a mistake, the SQ of the Marantz 1506 becomes very fatiguing after a while (originally I said it sounds fine) I have taken it back for a refund. Looking forward to trying out the Sony DN - 1070 as my Sony STR-DA 5400ES HDMI board has failed after only 6 years.

Curious what power and speakers you were using? I found my Marantz better sounding than the Onkyo it replaced. I'm using the receiver to drive Revel in-wall. The Marantz had a much more natural sounding presentation.
I'm surprised you'd try Sony looking for less fatigue, if you are referring to fatigue as brightness. Marantz or possibly Yamaha would be my recommendations for less fatigue for current production receivers.
Let me know how it works out.
I have noticed with the "dynamic volume" on that the internal amp can't handle the bass on Blu-ray with heavy bass cotnet, but when listening at higher volume that should be turned off anyway. I leave mine off.
I just wonder if a setting or something may have caused the issue for you.
