I recently went through a few integrated amps before I discovered the Ayre AX-7e. You can find them used for $2000 +/- depending on condition, etc. Does it sound like a SET amp? No. Does it sound outstanding. Yes. Make sure to seek out the "e" (Evolution) version if you get this amp.
I was in a similar situation in need of a cool running SS integrated to replace my KT120 tube amp for my home office listening room.

Hi Abe, nice Apple setup.
What app is allowing you to use the iPad as a wireless monitor? That is very cool.
Thanks
Does the Ayre have enough current to drive my Thiel loudspeakers?
I used to drive Thiel 1.6s with my AX-7. Plenty of power for that one in my room. I now have Vandy 2CE sigIIs and the little Ayre will clip if I try to recreate the Who at live concert SPLs! The 2.4s were on my shortlist for upgrade and I wasn't the least concerned that the AX-7 wouldn't have enough umpff.
I wouldn't count on it, but I haven't tried it so I don't know for sure. I haven't tried the 60wpc AX-7e on my Thiel CS2.4 as those speakers are covered up in storage down in the basement. I'm running my Tannoy Definition D500 speakers in the office with the Ayre. The Tannoys are more sensitive and easier to drive than my Thiels.
I could try the Ayre on my Thiels but that's not going to happen real soon as the basement is a cluttered mess right now with office supplies, retired PC's, some extra furniture, Christmas decorations, photo albums, empty boxes from audio gear, etc. You get the picture. It's a disorganized messy storage area. ;-)
I see. Will you convert your basement into a listening space for the Thiels?
I did convert my basement into 4 separate rooms.
1. Kids rec room
2. Wife's Spa room
3. HT room
4. 2-channel only dedicated listening room that housed my Thiel CS 3.6 speakers as you can see in the attached photo.
Prior to driving my Thiel speakers with Krell Evolution I used to drive them with Audio Research tube gear. Namely the Audio Research D-250 tube power amp and the Audio Research Ref pre amp with excellent results and then some.

kootenay-
which Krell models are in the pic! What cabling?
I know they don't get a lot of talk but SimAudio's I-5 (or its newer incarnation) I-5.3 is pretty dang nice. More musical than revealing but it soundstages.
I listened to one for quite a while before pulling the trigger. It was between that and a Brinkmann (of Germany, not flashlights) and I just couldn't justify the price difference.
The I-5 was a couple notches below their 2 box P-5 pre and W-3 power amp but space was a consideration too.
Thanks! for sharing- Brianmch
is there a current integrated from Simaudio?

Beautiful pic- kootenay.
which cabling do you use?
More of a general purpose basement with a bedroom and sufficient space for audio. That's the plan anyway but not sure when.
