This is the new one. And NOOOOOOO it is NOT for me! An email friend was asking me about this one. I have no idea what the new Mac's sound like. And my opinion of the older solid state Mac's was a little bias towards the negative. So I need an outside opinion.
He uses a monitor sub setup. Low level listening and likes the usual detail, etc.....

Well my remembrance of Mac gear was that it was very soft sounding.
I believe I described them as being about as exciting as bring in the groceries.
So I guess I'll just go with that answer.

I've owned a McIntosh MA6500 integrated amp for 14 very enjoyable years. After about 20 years of only tubes, I decided to try solid-state again for various reasons. I auditioned many preamps and power amps but could not find anything acceptable. Then I stumbled upon a dealer offering McIntosh. The sonics had a liquidity and smoothness I could not find in other brands. I soon visited two other McIntosh dealers and heard the same qualities on different loudspeakers. I was hooked. I placed an order for the MA6500 and have been very pleased since.
To further describe my MA6500, it offers a very natural and musical presentation, it is sonically neutral to very slightly warm, the amp is dead quiet, it has deep and solid bass, an extended and airy treble, is highly detailed, never fatiguing, and tosses up a wide, deep, and tall soundstage with excellent imaging. Reliability has been perfect.
I may go back to tubes someday, but it is a pleasure to never have to replace tubes or check bias. Even if I go back to tubes, I will never sell the McIntosh.
I suggest again that you read some of the many online magazine reviews of recent McIntosh gear and the MA5200 in particular. Here is one:

Runs away laughing.
Run back to your box of crayons and coloring book like a good little boy.
The MA5200 became available in 2013. There are plenty of online magazine reviews available.
Your friend in Omaha can order one from Crutchfield with free shipping, no sales tax, and a generous return policy. Here is a link:
He was using various vintage pieces over the years. And funny as it may seem he like the Stereotech receiver. A Mac product made or sold by StereoTech.
Stereotech was a less expensive brand of McIntosh products marketed under a different name in the mid-1970s. They were designed in the U.S. by Mac but built in Japan by Foster Electric. I remember seeing them as a young fellow at a McIntosh dealer in north Jersey.
Here is a brief history of Stereotech by retired McIntosh engineer Roger Russell:
Well apparently they are quite good. He seems to like them more than the older Mc brand pieces
what else is important? ;)
"The MA5200 delivers the full McIntosh audio experience in a sleek, compact size. "
Why not suggest he actually audition one?
This guy is in Omaha and they barely have a McDonalds. I think he is using older Klipsch Forte's?????
I think he is deciding on new or old????
