Hello,Daughter needs replacement amp for her Large Advents, as her integrated NAD is dead. I know this is a low amount of $$ to work with, but every penny is going to school and borrowing the rest.
She is taking pre-med, so heavy class/homework load, plus year-round track training (track scholarship)so she is only able to work a few hours each week.
The Advents need some power to drive them, so looking at 100 or more watt amp capability to sound their best.
I upgraded the x-overs, centered the tweeters and replaced the woofer surrounds ...looking nearly new... they do sound surprisingly good for what they are.
Prefer integrated or receiver, but could make do with just an amp and find an inexpensive preamp later. She has played viola in orchestra most of her life, now in a University orchestra, so I am trying to get quality sound. She listens to everything from blues/jazz, 60's/70's/modern rock, pop and of course classical.
Looking forward to suggestions for a replacement.
EDIT: I am looking for a USED amp, thought I had that already in my post, but obviously would not be able to find anything new for that kind of money :)

Behringer A500. You should be able to buy one for $200 with a right of return.
For a cheap preamp you could get a TCC selector switch and an ART DJ phono pre.
If you are looking for power and musical quality look into some of the vintage receivers. There are plenty of sleepers like Yamaha, Onkyo, Optonica, Realistic, etc...
There is smaller Marantz 2226b you may be able to talk down a few bucks. A smoking stereo and don't be fooled by the power rating. It can take the paint off your walls!
Or that Sansui AU-517. Also a good sounding piece with tons of power.
The original poster was looking for 100 wpc or more. While the Marantz 2226b is decent sounding old receiver once recapped (I own one), it is a long way from 100 wpc.

New Caps.
Some wooden shims to hold board up to facilitate removal and replacement.
Old leaky caps.
New binding posts.
Hi Rich;
I recently dove into a little project with my 12 year old son. He has the Pioneer Andrew Jones designed monitors that while not pigs for power, do wake up when driven with more juice.
For the power you require, I would look at a Adcom GFA-5300, 5400, 545 or similar.
I had a semi old (1995) made in Japan Adcom 5400 lying around. The GFA-5400 is rated at 125 wpc @ 8 ohms and will drive most anything to reasonable spl's.
Well, after firing it up there was some humming coming through one side, and after some googling I was 90% sure it was a leaky filter cap(s).
We changed out all four filter caps as well as the binding posts
and it sounds very good. Not just for the money, but good period.
One can find these amps all day every day on Ebay between $150 and $300 that need nothing and sound very good. If they do need some new parts, they are cheap and easy fixes. They will certainly kick the shit out of some Best Buy receiver.
Some prefer the sound of mosfets in the 5300/5400/5500, where as others like the sound of bi-polars in the older 535/545/555 models. Personally, I find them to sound more alike than different - but that's me.
Good luck.

for a bit above your budget figure.
It looks like a beauty for EXACTLY your price.
I have no idea how powerful or how good it is, however, for $300, I bet it could be a good choice.
"Advents love power".... these are only 50 watts channel...

A 326BEE is able to produce a goodly level of output from Advents. Henry K recommended a minimum of 15 watts. That's pretty close (pun intended).
I confess that, especially in the garage environment where I typically listen outside it, having lots of power can be nice. What's most important for that budget?
why aren't you using one on your advents? :)

I thought I addressed that question with this post . Was listening outside as I received your email. I happened to be cranking some Madonna. Here's my environment:
If the Advents were inside in a typical room, the 326BEE would likely provide sufficient power - and a more refined top end presentation.
What I'm looking for is something closer to 100 watts if possible, but will keep in consideration as sound quality is most important.
Thank you

Rich, you should not look for cheap 100 watts.

This integrated is compared to the old 3020 by reviewers. $380 new.

I have read several posts stating that people who actually have this gear like the 316 over the 326 and 356. I preferred the 326 over the 356 myself
Agreed
At $300, pickings are slim. I imagine some home theater receiver from craigslist would be a better deal.
There a couple NAD for less here on the Trader

Does the NAD light up when you turn it on? Could be something easy. I dont know but Id guess there are internal fuses. Worth checking.

It's smoked... 2nd time... so won't pay again to fix. It was in poor internal condition from a pervious water spillage...

326be for 360 offer 300. Its under integrated ss amps. Theres a Marantz pm6005 there too asking 350 free ship. Its 700 new and she has the original bix remote etc. The other NAD sold

Two of these should do the trick. I have been using one for my AV speakers for about ten years. If you bridge them ( 150 wpc) you will have plenty of power for the Advents!
With my modified New Advents, I've used two different (used) $300 amps.
Initially, I ran a NAD 326BEE. Nice performer with decent power and very good top end extension and natural sense of air. Needs good ventilation as it runs toasty. Offers tone controls, sub output and other features which may or may not be considered valuable.
Currently using a Crown XLS-1500 power amp. While the top is a touch sterile and lacking in air, the midrange is wonderful and with 300 watts/channel on tap, it can really crank the Advents. Also, it runs cool which is necessary for my situation where it is situated in a garage closet.
How about an NAD 2400 or 2700? They have gobs of power, with input level controls too. No preamplifier is necessary.
The 2700 is interesting, she was using my old 3400, which was 100 watts and still could have used more power.

.
Have not experienced them.
Does it matter new or used? There is a Sansui AU-517 in the Asylum Trader $325 65wpc. I have no affiliation with the seller.....

Thanks for the suggestion, but amp is over 35 years old and only 65 watts.
It would need re-cap and other things which would add to expense and hassle. This is also at the end of Sansui quality... the better Sansui amps were made before this.

Always looking for used :) I have only bought a few new pieces of gear and usually try to find the best used deals I can.

Can you provide a list of $300 amplifiers you are considering? Then, we can provide input as to which one might be the best sounding.
Thanks,
John Elison
Hello John,
Well, if I had a list I would not be having to post! :)
The point of the post is for suggestions on which quality/good sounding amps sell used at or under $300... I can research it from there.
Appreciate your reply and it has been a long time since our last message exchange :)
Have a great day!

I have not heard them myself, but the following units come close to what you are seeking:

If factory refurbished is OK, here is a possibility:
Thank you for the suggestion.

The 2700 THX was my entry into the "low end of the high end". I had two in bridged mono feeding NHT 1.3a's and two NHT SWP passives. Needless to say, it was a powerful set-up. The 2700's were not as "warm sounding" as my subsequent Hafler 9300 THX and Melos SHA-Gold set-up, but the 2700 is a fine sounding power amplifier, nonetheless. I have to assume the 2400 is similar sounding. Again, input level controls preclude the need for a preamplifier. And, they're cheap now.
Will need preamp as she wants a tuner and to use her turntable.

One does not need a preamplifier to "plug in a tuner", but a phono stage is a different animal.
There's a 2700 THX on eBay right now (7:24 EDT, 6-21-2016) for $195.00, with less than 40 minutes left. I'm thinking about buying it. If I don't, I hope someone here does. It's a great deal.
Ooops, 6-12-2016 is the date.
