-one phase of the low channel is missing. That would cause it to be 6 db lower than the other channel.

Is there any way to check/rectify this? I am not very savvy with technical jargon.
There are few if any reputable people in this area that I can take it to.
If the low volume channel is putting out a single-ended signal instead of balanced, it will be 6db below (much less volume) the good, balanced channel.
An easy, non-technical way to check: connect the low volume balanced channel output to a balanced input, and the other channel from the single-ended output to a single-ended input. If they play at the same volume level, then you have found what the problem is: the "balanced" signal is playing single-ended. Detecting where the problem is will be a bit more difficult.
You will need to swap balanced/single-ended connections for both inputs and outputs and use logic to determine which unit is at fault. I bet it's the modded component, and I bet the fix is easy for any technician.

Will Do!!
Try switching cable connections at the JC2 CD input. If the low volume channel switches channels, the problem is not in the JC2 preamp. If this is the case, the problem is either in the cables or the CD player. Without changing the reversed connections at the JC2 CD input, reverse the cable connections at the CD player output. If the low-volume channel switches back, then the problem is in the CD player. If not, the problem is in the cables.
Good luck,
John Elison
Thanks, I will try that.
