I have been looking for a balanced circuitry tube preamp to complement my Decware Zstage and Emotive Emotiva XSP-1 Gen 2 for some time now. I really wanted a used BAT model. However, I came across a used ModWright LS 36.5 on Audiogon at a good price and bought it. In a word, it's better than my existing units. You would expect that given the difference in price.
It mates so well with my Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2 amp that I'm tempted to replay my entire CD collection. The unit seems more transparent, quieter with a deeper sound stage. For the first time I heard reverb coming off a lightly struck wood block in the back of the hall in Gershwin's Cuban Rhapsody. There seems to be a bit more sparkle to the highs and greater front to back separation of instruments. For example, the drum sets on the Chesky jazz recordings are more clearly placed at the rear of the venue but with no loss of detail.
It does well with my PrimaLuna Prologue Seven Monoblocks but the improvement isn't as great. At 70 watts per channel compared to 500 you would expect this outcome.
I'm using the Russian made 6H30DR super tubes made in 1970. Each tube comes with a date and lengthy test report. I also have the original set that came with the unit and another Russian set made in 1959 that I haven't tried yet.
Briefly, I find the LS 36.5 a bit richer, more refined and dynamic. It is one of my best audio buys.

Nice score! Does MW make an integrated amp?
I'm not surprised it sounds good. Last year at the Capitol Audiofest a lot of the rooms had ModWright amps in them and there was a lot of good sound with great tonal balance and remarkable fidelity. My guess is you'll be mentally patting yourself on the back for years to come. Ya done good.
