I have had SAE gear in the past and still have the SAE 2800 parametric eq. for not too much you can pick up a SAE 2800 eq and that will help with tailoring the sound of your system to your taste.
I upgraded my SAE 2800 eq and use it everyday in my system. This will go a long way to improving the sound of your system and controlling room issues that affect the sound of your system.
Also, if you haven't done this. Try doing a proper speaker placement following the guidelines for speakers setups and you will also be amazed at how much better/different your system will sound. It may even save you the extra cash of spending on newer more expensive gear that sometimes may not work out for the better in some systems.
SAE gear has good sound maybe not the best, but it not far off either. I went from SAE to SUMO gear and there was a difference in sound but not by much and definitely more expensive. the amps were designed by the same man so that's why there wasn't much difference is sound.
I was even thinking of putting together another SAE system just for fun in the second system room. The SAE gear has that certain something that appeals to me.
Even the new ATI amps have that same certain sound that SAE have/had. And yes, they have a common designer over at ATI that worked for SAE.
I'm not saying SAE is the best gear out there but after I started to upgrade my gear from the SAE gear I wasn't happy with the sound with the newer gear that I had with the SAE gear. It took me a long time/gear to get back to where I was happy again in sound that I had with the SAE setup and eventually found the right combo that put my system in to a Audiophile's musical heaven! :)
If you do decide to get newer gear, I would suggest like the other member did. Go with integrated amps, best bang for the buck!
Hope this helps!

THANK YOU cougar! great advice!!
next step is to move the speakers all around.
my SAE preamp and power amp, sound great to me. buying new B&W bookshelf speakers was a big step up from 40 year old Ohm speakers!
best

I don't know the age of your SAE components or if it would make sense from a cost perspective, but new capacitors installed by a competent tech might really improve their performance.
40-year old Ohm speakers with fresh capacitors (and surrounds on the drivers???) might surprise you.
