THANK YOU everyone! I have the 1970's idea (since I am old!) that separates are better. maybe that is wrong! consider, a McIntosh power amp, 150 watts/side, is $4500 and 75 pounds. McIntosh integrated amp 100 watts is $4500 and 38 lbs. does this mean the QUALITY of the power amp is better???? maybe not!
great point that the room is not large. maybe a high quality integrated amp is my answer! I had hoped to spend maybe $2000 or so on power amp and $1000-$2000 on preamp. maybe integrated is easier and best! then, upgrade to high quality CD player.
one dumb question: should I pay $4500 for McIntosh integrated amp 100 watts per side? B&W speakers specify something like 30-120 watts, and room is 13 by 13 and 10 foot ceiling. it should be PLENTY loud!
always interested in more advice! thanks! bob

Not knowing anything specific about McIntosh, I did know a dentist who had them, but he didn't seem like an audiophile, so I never brought up the subject.
You specific question answered (in general): Yes, othe amplifier is way more capable than the integrated. The integrated is probably well suited to the loudspeakers and your room, so you can spare yourself dealing with a 75 pound chassis for no real apparent benefit.
You probably want to audition the McIntosh and the Parasound line. For the price of the McIntosh, you can probably get Parasound separates. It's your choice. Nobody knows which you would like better. Someone mentioned Anthem, so you might have another possible audition you can arrange.
How about something from the PrimaLuna camp? I owned a Prologue 2 integrated. With a little input tube rolling-very respectable.Sounded great with phono and the Gamut CD3.

thanks tidy cat! will check it out! bob
thanks inmate 51! that gives me some idea of the watts I need! yesterday I got the speakers. with the volume turned up halfway it was plenty loud and still clear. ancient 50 watt SAE amp
thanks!!
I'd live with your SAE for a while, and think about whether you can really improve on that with whatever your budget is. Sounds like you're happy with the volume provided at the very least. I wouldn't buy anything you can't try at home first, and A/B with your current setup.
