Thanks for replies, I hadn't tried anything yet and just starting to dig in and for fear of just now knowing where to start etc... I will switch the rega with the concept tomorrow and see if there's a difference, and didn't know about the three positions mentioned either. Both seemike viable and easy places to start. Thanks and keep you posted

I assummed you had already tried toggling the switch but since you have not that is the first thing to try per John's post before trying the rega. That switch could make a big difference with a low gain cartridge.
Sorry for not responding on cartridge was in bed when I responded last night. Cartridge clearaudio mc and the toggle switch was set to magnet. Flipped it to mc and now it sounds perfect. Told you I was a newb. I'm reminded of the saying that sometimes a horse with stripes is just a zebra. Thanks all much appreciated.
You still haven't mentioned what cartridge you're using. Without specific cartridge information it's difficult to provide a meaningful answer to your question. What cartridge do you have connected to your P5 phono input and in what position is the toggle switch on the back panel right underneath the phono ground connector?
If you have a moving magnet (MM) cartridge connected with the toggle switch in its upper MC/100-ohm position, that would cause the problem you are experiencing. You should move the toggle to the lower MM/47k-ohm switch position.
Additionally, if you have a low-output moving coil (MC) cartridge connected with the toggle switch in the lower MM/47k-ohms position, that would also cause the problem you are experiencing. You should move the toggle to the middle or upper switch position -- whichever sounds better.
