In Reply to: RE: How would the Parasound A23 pair up with a Conrad Johnson Classic 2SE posted by airtime on April 06, 2016 at 14:02:49
Speaking only electrically, make sure the output impedance / input impedance ratio is maybe 1:5 or even 1:10
My Pair of A23 are sitting one each behind my panels. The A23 has a listed 33kohm input impedance which makes it electrically compatible with MANY good to great preamps.
What is the output impedance of the CJ?

Follow Ups:
The CJ has a "stated" low output impedance - number unknown. But according to it's own web site it is a zero feedback low output design. Making it suitable for almost any situation.
the NAD C275BEE has a switchable 100k variable input the 10k fixed input.
The 10k sounds thinner and gets edgy.
The 100k sounds better - except at some situations the sounds gets blurred sounding. Like trying to describe the color blue???? I think because it uses another one of those incredibly crappy coupling caps and a cheap potentiometer directly in the signal path.
One day when I'm settled back in I may take a crack at replacing that cap in the 100k circuit with a Nichicon audio grade cap.
I was thinking that ratio was higher like 1:100 so I looked up the Parasound P-5 and it is listed at 100 ohm output impedance which would be a 1:330 ratio between the P-5 and A-23. Another thing to be careful of would be that tube pre-amps should be warmed up first before turning on the power amps as I think I read one time that tube pre-amps can send out some funky stuff as they are warming up. That might damage a speaker depending on what the anomaly coming from the pre is. I have 5 A-23s so I'm biased ;) I like the sound.
I have 2x @A23 AND the P5. One per panel.
A gutsy little amp, no question.
Maybe I mis-read, but I thought the OP was concerned with a CJ preamp. I have NO idea of the output impedance of that pre, but the A23 input impedance IS usefully high.

I was just using the P-5 A-23 example to show the output to input match ratio maybe being a little higher. I too am 100% sure that the good folks at Parasound had designed the P-5 A-23 impedance match to be a very good one. Sometimes while typing the thoughts don't quite come out the way one intends as I was indeed aware he was talking about the CJ.
By the way, I read your equipment list and was wondering how those A-23s sound with your 1.6 Maggies? I usually see or read of people who say Maggies are really power hungry and they seem to use amps with more output than the A-23.
ONE of the A23 per speaker as biamp is working well. The crossover of the panel is about 600hz which is just above the 50:50 power distribution frequency. I help that along by using the P5 crossover to low-cut the panels at maybe 50 hz. Give or take. The 400 watts per panel is less than 1db under the 'D' amp these are replacing. I suspect the burst power is greater with the Parasounds, too. They, as you know, have a fairly robust power supply and a claim of some wacky amount of current.
Plans call for the acquisition of a MiniDSP 2x8 which will replace the speaker level crossover with line level. This'll net me another near-3db and get me over the apparent power of a pair of A21s without the crossover mods.
Total 4ohm power including the sub is over 1kw. That's about what it takes to annoy everybody.
As an Aside, and nothing to do with Parasound, I once owned a Rotel of similar power rating. The RB1070 is 135x2 but NO 4 ohm rating. The Bridged mono rating was 360 or so which IMPLIES a rating of 180@4 per side. I sold it as quickly as I could. It just Didn't get it done at all. Not even close.

I'll bet you'll like the mini 2x8 when you get it. I use a 4x10 with my speakers and it has some really nice features. You can adjust the gain by switching some jumpers internally as well as fine tune it to a room using the sliders in the software program. There is also an app available you can download to your phone or tablet to control the basic functions to use it as the pre-amp. Sorry Airtime. Got a little O.T.
