I'm not sure why you'd expect an importer who sets up dealer networks to sell you a "demo" and thereby take biz from his dealers. Was it really that he "expected" you to drive 1.5 hours, or was he just providing the closest dealer where you could audition the product? I'd think if you were ready to buy you could have done that on the phone with the dealer via cc and had it shipped.
Like the poster below, my very limited experience with Jonathan was fine. I e-mailed some questions about Line Magnetic gear and received a rapid and informative response along with the phone # for a dealer nearby.

Thanks. I see their importer will not pick up the phone, email only. And the manufacturers webpage says they will not sell parts or service to anyone not the original owner.
WTF? So many crazy companies in the world.
If you are NOT the original owner and therefore can't get parts or service?
IF TRUE?
A Major Red Flag. What's the assumption on the part of the importer or service group? Stolen? Illegally Imported (Grey Market?) or what?
I'd really need to see some confirmation of this before buying or NOT buying. A single data point? Doesn't make it for me.
Too much is never enough
He has a retail business on the west coast and was advertising the piece online. I was ready to buy. And I don't think a dealer that far away is necessarily realistic. Would you buy a car from another state?
I am on the east cost.
The distance involved was just far enough that one would at least think of auditioning it, but too far in the real world of jobs and other responsibilities. And there was no assurance that the dealer in the next state would have a demo. or be willing to negotiate. And frankly if he doesn't want my business, I fuggedaboudit.
And he was quick to chime in with pesonal ad hminem remarks
do another search. there are remerks about being sure you had the original buyers bill of sale to get service before repurchase.
Highlighted link is a search of ALL forums for the subject Tone Imports. See many negative posts? Here's a search for subject Leben. Negative posts about service?

Don't feel I can comment about Jonathan's remark to you since I've only heard one side of the story. But again, the guy's an importer. Its certainly NOT unusual for importers/distributors to direct potential customers to the closest dealer in their network.
There are plenty of brands that have limited dealer networks. Ya can't always find one that only requires a few minutes drive to get to. You said you don't know if you'd be able to audition the product you were interested in at the closest dealer to you. Doesn't sound like you bothered to call to find out.
Hey, I have no dog in this race. But as far as I can tell, Tone Imports is well regarded, as are the products they import.

refusing to service one of their products just because its a second owner. You'd be charged, but would definitely get service/parts.
That probably wouldn't scare me off from purchasing something new, but now I certainly wouldn't buy a *used* Leben. Really dumb policy. Thanks.
I actually bought a Leben 300 a bit later used from a local (Boston) audiophile, not a dealer in the next state, enjoyed it, but dumped it when I realized that in the future I wouldn't get service without HIS bill of sale. Bought a US made tube amp on Abe Collins remarks, after a while moved up to Pass and am staying there. Both US companies are courteous and know how to treat their customers. Stll sorry I sold my pleistocene CJ preamp.
