Hello everyone looking for some help from people much more in the know than i am.
My Marantz 9200 from 2002 seems to be dying (either loose connection in preamp to amp connections or amps are dying) , its driving my main room.
I am looking at going the separates route this time but have limited funds. I spent around 3k for the 9200 and really like the "warm" sound it prodcues through my Mission 780's
My question (please dont be insulted by my naive question) is since i like the sound of the Marantz should i stcik with a Marantz preamp + any amp combo? Basically does the preamp mainly affect the tonality or the amp or is it really a function of both combined?

Also make sure that the amp isn't just fine but your issues aren't with the Keraform woofers in the Missions. Try with a different set of speakers.
Yeah been down that road before...speakers are of same age and have had to replace 2 midrange drivers in two separate speakers already.
Since I can get sound from the speakers I ruled them out. And I don't think it's a dirty connection because I really have to push on the jumpers to get any sound ...this only works (sort of) after the unit warms up)
I have given up on any surround mode expect stereo , this at least gives me all soundtracks . eventually it all ends up on one speaker only (always front right) but at least there is sound! Same applies to all audio sources...CD, sacd, DVD, internet/wd
I suggested cleaning the jumpers and jacks in an earlier post. Failing that not helping you've at least identified a spot that directly affects the situation. The jacks or some part of the board immediately at the back of the unit has broken contact and is temporarily fixed when you press on that area. If you cannot find anything yourself and you take it in for service, be sure to tell the tech about pushing the jumpers effect on the situation.
Honestly, you've already found the area that needs attention. Hopefully you can fix it yourself.

Yeah I know I should do this, its just such a pain to disassemble everything !!
OK I don't have any specific electronic cleaner.. Can I use mineral spirits or alcohol ?
If alcohol isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) is good. Use 99.9%. Can be bought at drugstore sometimes have to ask pharmacist.
Note that even just the action of taking out the jumpers and putting back in without any cleaning will help somewhat. Even without a cleaner in case you don't have any around. Maybe this is something you can try without major disassembly.
Cheers!

ok so went thru all cleaning...even loosened the pre/out board...
First with it all open and loose - all channels worked...
Tightened it all up again and now the only 2 channels that dont work are FL & Center....they do produce a signal bit sooo low you cant hear it unless you crank it...
I went thru all the decoding formats and this is consistent at this point for where those channels should be producing sound. I see the peak light come on so it seems to be getting the signal
loose solder joints or bad amps for those channels ?
Cover off helps connectivity. Back on physically missaligns it. Can be a solder joint or even a pcb trace that makes/breaks connection. Or just about any internal connection in the area between pre and power amps.
I'm not sure how much to ask you to try versus having a tech look at it.
Next steps would include poking and prodding with the power on. I've had much sucess over the years with friend's and my own equipment. Even trouble shooting by turning the lights off and watching for sparks in the dark when I push and prod. (Sometimes you have to put away the multimeter and be a little unorthodox!)
Would be going into dangerous territory with the power on.
Again, a tech with a schematic might be best.
Sorry the cleaning didn't work.

yeah i am drawing the line on playing with it while power is on...done enough electrical work over the years that getting hammered once with 120v is enough for a life time (faulty shielded cable, damn it).
Fact is i know i will need a new preamp as some time for the new tech here and coming. Since i am not set on what i want to do i am going to get an amp first then decide on peamp later. Will use the 9200 as preamp for now.
So what do you guys think on that 7 channel Marantz MM8077 ? i like that fact that it has toroidal power vs large capacity Ei. This baby has got to last an very very long time
Ouch! Sorry to hear about your past experience getting zapped.
I'm not familiar with the Marantz model you are asking about. Hopefully someone here can chime in or perhaps do a search in the forum.
Cheers!

BTW....anyone here have any experience with Outlaw Audio amps? looking at their 7 channel 7700 unit 7x200w
Does that amp require a 20 amp service?
Too much is never enough
website says 15 but i have 20 so no issues
The TOP Outlaw 7-channel amp takes 2x15amp plugs. I'm guessing that 2 circuits are called for.
Amp puts out a LOT of power.
Too much is never enough
The pre-amp, is the "heart of any system" choose wisely and the rest is pure listening pleasure!
Is that the old SR-9200?
If it is have it fixed. It's a tank and you're not going to improve much unless you start from scratch. If you're happy - don't change unless you really do want a change. It's gonna cost ya time AND money.
Yup sr9200....found a authorized service center, only $20 for them to take look at it BUT was told expect a month ! only one tech for av receivers.
Should be simple to fix if they can find the source.
Sometimes, an inspection of the motherboard is in order, but you need good eyesight and [sound] judgment.
Consider a redo if not successful. There's a lot of used audio-video stuff for sale all of the time. $3K ought to get you something very good, even new.
It's worth the wait. Trying to reinvent you system you take you years.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. No pun intended. but you understand my point.
You can fiddle around with two channel for a while. But with HT getting all those connections and sources to work well together doesn't happen often.
If you are doing home theater as well the current Marantz HT separates are reasonably priced and a good value. If you didn't need latest tech features some of the previous A/V preamps are around new at great prices.
If you just do stereo I'd consider a Marantz integrated. Sorry for the problem with your unit but Marantz is generally very reliable. I'm still using one of their like 2nd gen Bl-ray players and an AV 8003 with no issues.
well i guess the 100k question is ...is a 13/14 year old av receiver getting old?
Was wondering if the amps section was going maybe i could just get a new amp and then use the 9200 just as a pre-amp
I use this system for both HT and music...got kids going to college soon
If the receiver is still meeting your needs I suppose it's new enough. There's new features out like if you use Blu-ray you need HDMI to receive lossless soundtracks via DTS-MA or Dolby HD, new streaming features, etc. but if you are alright with the sound most issues can be resolved by taking the video to the TV.
If the 9200 has full preamp outputs you are in business by adding a power amp. The Marantz is a good bang for the buck. Some of the Class D have auto on/off which is cool, it goes on/off with the receiver by sensing if a signal or not.
If not really wanting or able to spend the money get a decent amp now then upgrade to a better preamp down the road.
Then again, maybe a repair would be cheapest yet and you already know you like what you have.
OK so its meets my needs for sound only, well when it worked because like I said with my mission 780s it had a very nice sound quality for my taste. I have a sony es sacd player and still plan to use that, DVD player is upscaling denon hdcd and it has issues ;-) but I can get it work. I added a WD media server to get to internet for things like Pandora and Netflix, and use an external DAC for conversion..... Added an iPod attachment so I got that too. Solved the HDMI issue with a switcher and having all video sources go directly to monitor, a panasonic plasma. So I kept "ahead" of technology for awhile with these adds and bypasses. Now I am wondering if I should sstart upgrading a little at a time.
I have found that preamps and speakers do the most to define the overall
system sound. Differences between tube and SS amps can be very noticeable,
Differences in comparably priced SS tends to be very incremental IMHO.
If you want a warm overall sound and want a SS amp go with a hybrid preamp or
tube preamp. YMMV....
which can either be thrilling OR frustratingly complicated (depends on you), have you thought
about having the 9200 repaired? IF you really like it that would be the thing to do.
"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
yup i am looking into getting it repaired. My first attempt at opening it up and looking around amounted to nothing other than cleaning it out and making sure everything was tight (no boards loose etc..) i could not visually see and broken solder joints.
I set it all up again and it seemed to work great ...for about another week or two...then it started again. Speakers would go on/off. I thought it had to do with the surround decoding perhaps but i kind of eliminated that by noticing as the unit warmed up I could press the jumper connectors between the pre outs & ins and then the speakers would work again. Sometimes that works and all th speakers stay on other times only one works and i have to listen in stereo mode to here all the sound channels ....
So based upon that i am thinking its either the board that connects the two or possible a bad solder joints or maybe bad amps????
Seems to me that if pressing the jumpers affects the sound, they just need a good cleaning. Clean the jacks too.
And that area would also appear to be the place to look at internally if cleaning doesn't help.
Make sure unit is turned off.
Cheers!
