I bought a USP-1 emotiva preamp years ago. I gave it away. It had the 1980s el-cheapo japanese mass market sound. I couldn't take it.

Thanks for the feedback. I put some black electrical tape over the IR receptor areas that were suggested to me by PAR so I'll wait and see if it happens again, If it repeats it's problem I guess I'll go shopping. This town just don't have any where to reliably get it looked at except one and that 85 bucks to start.
IF a problem is found and can be fixed, that 85$ should be 'written off'.
Most shops do that IF you go ahead with the fix after diagnosis.
