I want a matched pair of these, one for each channel, so that the remote volume control serves equally as a balance control. Does such a rig exist? Please advise...

Why not get a remote passive preamp with a balance control?
If you have two identical preamps with two identical remotes, you will not have balance control via the remotes. They will each most likely work with both passives, and may actually do this somewhat intermittently, which will likely conflict with your goals.
I do this with my Canary C900 monoblock preamps. The units must be spaced one each to the left and right on the rack with 30" in between. I'm able to control one volume knob at a time. No need for a balance control. And passives could be separated by a greater distance because they are less wide than the Canaries. Near perfect channel separation this way.
Is the channel separation of the average preamp less than the channel separation of your source? (What is your source?)
I guess thy don't call it the Asylum for nothing.
I get a wider soundstage with my Canary C900 monoblock preamps compared to my Cary SLP-05.
The source is a Cary 303/300 CDP. I don't know how the CD and/or CDP separate(s) the signal left from right.
It's just that I recently became interested in passive preamps and was surprised to find that there are no passive monoblocks AFAIK. It seems like a good idea to me.
And I definitely want a remote control to fine tune the stereo imaging from my listening chair. My kitties insist on it, too, because they sit on my lap and dislike being disturbed -- they want me to sit and stay.
just use one channel of a stereo pot and try to find different RC freqs for each pot.
Good luck.

If you have a diy bent, you can assemble this preamp kit. It has remote control that adjust both volume and balance.
