Does anyone know the difference between these two preamps?
Follow Ups:
In addition to what the others have pointed to:
The 2D had one SS regulated FET supply for all four tubes, the 3 has another identical regulated SS FET supply and the 3A has yet another identical SS FET regulated supply which is dedicated to the phono stage.
The downside here is the amount of capacitance in the PS.
Power supply capacitance of the:
2D has a total of 300uf, the M3 has 500uf and the 3A has 800uf.
Another substantial difference, the M3A requires a complete tear down of the chassis to access the rear panel (jacks and series-resistors) which is not P-P soldered.
The 3 and 3A can have either a torroidal or EI core. Not sure why they go back and forth...perhaps inventory?
Cheers,
W
In addition to the O/B PS for the 3-
there are more caps in both the PS and the main Pre-amp-
The PS uses a Torroidal x-former - as opposed to the Old E-I for the 2
The CD And DAT inputs are wired from the back board(jacks) to the front selector PCB with 10 Meg Ohm resisters in the signal path-
there were plans for a DAC PCB to go along the left side of the Pre-amp
The basic circuit is the same from the 2 to the 3- with lots of parts changes- the RIAA caps were a bunch of German PolyPros that were hand matched. New Vol Pots, totally new Tape Loop/buffer stage
the filaments are always on with the 3, and reduced plate voltage till you turn it on-
the coupling caps were made for AI as were the Big filtering caps-
the 3 could accommodate a John Curl designed SS MC phono stage - which was quite good
That's all I remmember...
Happy Listening
FWIW the external PS with my L3 is not torroidal it is E-I
The 3 was the first to have an outboard PS. The 2s were internal.
Opus 33 1/3
