Hi
Anyone know when the volume control was changed on the hovland hp100?
ie after what serial numbers?
Would serial number 1446 be an early or mid or late model?
I hear dthat noise/pops can occur in the earlier black resistor type volume controls.
What was the cure for this? Clening?
Thank You

Actually the control is the same, however there was a run of bad switches for the controls. Last one I replaced was serial number 1100, so yours is later.
There is no way to fix the problem without replacing the control. I used one of these the last time. It was tricky but they fit and work better than original.

Thanks for the reply.
So the mention of volume controls with black resitors as opposed to later blues is a red herring?
ie black being liable to become noisy/pop and blue being good.
The resistors had nothing to with the good or bad volume controls. It was the switches that were made incorrectly. It is possible that the later blue resistor controls had correct switches. However there are also good controls with the black resistors.

One other thing.
As i understand it, tnere was one factory upgrade in tne production of tne hp100.
To the psu.
Is it still possible to obtain tne parts for this?
Is it a worthwhile update?
Cheers
The update consisted of moving some of the filament wires, putting in a few resistors (in the power supply and ground circuit) and removing the filter choke.
It was designed to get rid of ground loops in some systems. I don't know what effect it would have on the sound, I never did this "upgrade" to any units. I suspect if you don't have a ground loop problem, it probably isn't worth doing, but I don't know.

Thank you.
Much appreciated.
