referring to EQ. I replied, not necessarily and I stand by that.

You're missing the distinction. A preamp with tubes amplifying the signal is an active preamp. A preamp that's just an input selector and pot, or TVC is a passive preamp. These are types of preamps. Phono preamps are inherently active preamps.
Phono preamps can have either passive EQ's or active EQ's, but both will still be active preamps.
A preamp using tubes in the gain stages can have either passive or active RIAA EQ. By far the most common EQ, and, IMHO, the preferable method, is passive. Never cared much for feedback derived active EQ. Clear? The statement you made which I disagreed with seemed to infer if tubes were used in the gain stages the EQ HAD TO BE ACTIVE. Not so.

No, I said a preamp with tubes is an active preamp, regardless of the type of EQ used.

Opus, didn't you enjoy your time with those EAR, Graham Slee and Yaqin phono stages ? They utilized active feedback EQ; right ?
Passive EQ or Feedback EQ can work; and sound fine...
but in tubed ones, rolling different tubes could alter the EQ curve, no? I'm not so sure about the 834P using active EQ, either. I know the Yaqin does. Didn't know about the Graham.
