I do not doubt you or you're impressions of what you're hearing at all. Let's be honest, the EH is, well, I think you put it as politely as is possible, "grainy". Just about anything will sound better, and I don't say that to denigrate the GL, only to set the stake of comparison. I do like the GL and use them as cathode followers in my CAT SL1. Some folks say that CF's shouldn't have much if any influence on sound, but think they do and the GL does it for me there. Back to my point, bask in the glow of the GL's for a while, and when the curiosity about WTF else may be out there, try the JJ's. My all-around favorite sounding 6DJ8 type is the Tele 6922. The JJ's come really, really close to the sound of my vintage Tele's. They are THAT good. I've been getting them selected, tested and delivered to my door for around $32 a piece. I've been using them as the input tube in the phono of the CAT for about 6 months and they sound wonderful and quiet as a stone.

Thank you for the good information. I assume you are talking about the gold pin JJs. From what I've heard, there is more of difference between the regular and gold pin than just the gold pins.
I tried six of the JJ gold pins recently from a standard tube vendor. Three of the six drifted out of spec over about a half hour during my preliminary tube tester checkout (conservative conditions; Vp = 100v and grid bias that results in no more than an Ip of 10mA, well below the max plate dissipation spec). I know some vendors don't carry JJ because of the large fallout from the factory. So it seems like some burn-in and screening from a vendor that is willing to do this would be well worth the premium. Where did you get yours?
BTW, I too liked the sound of the GL but 11 of the 12 that I purchased have gone very noisy between 100 and 700 hours of operation. My application is very conservative (Herron VTSP-2A is very easy on tubes). Vendors will claim that they aren't seeing this but 100 or more hours would be beyond any reasonable return period. As time goes by, I'm seeing more and more reports from others that their GLs are going noisy as well. Until the factory sorts this out, taking a chance on GL 6922s could be a costly mistake.
Yes, the gold pin version. Have been getting them from Tube Depot lately and quality seems good.
