In Reply to: RE: And old curiosity ... is the mbl 6010d preamplifier really that good ? posted by Lesage on June 26, 2015 at 07:40:45
Hi you are right and i would love to have the opportunity.
For now i have to trust people who have been exposed to it.
My point is ... we have to decide.
Or we trust our senses or we trust the scope.
I can even accept the idea that what we see on the scope cannot be related with the sound quality. Fine !
Then ... if a preamp completely full of op-amps sounds very very good to the ear, as i guess is the case but i did not have the opportunity to verify this, well this means that very very good sound can be obtained by op-amps.
So the conclusion would be, very important for me, that op-amps are not bad per se ... but it is important how op-amps are used.
I see some prejudices versus op-amps.
Maybe because cheap cannot be good ?
Yes i will try to listen to it but it is not that common.
I will have to go to the next audio show.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
bg

At Axpona last year the best sounding room that I was able to visit was using a vintage(their term) 6010 for a preamp. If it can sound that good with master tape based playback and modern mbl amps and speakers, I would think it would not be the weak link in any system. I have only heard that preamp in a total mbl set-up, but I think it's good piece.

Hi and thank you sincerely indeed.
This is indeed the kind of answer i was expecting.
I am perfectly aware of the fact that the MBL preamp is not just a bunch of op-amps ... its construction must be excellent in any part.
However on audiophile terms it should not sound that good with all those op-amps.
I would be extremely curious to see at the schematic of that preamp.
Extremely. To see how they managed.
Thank you again for your extremely valuable answer.
Kind regards,
bg
