I used to exclusively own tube preamps, but I have been in the passive camp for some time.
That said, if it must be a tube preamp, I recommend the deHavilland Ultraverve. It's one of the best I have heard in the under 10K realm.

Follow Ups:
A Tortuga? I noticed the base model is about $2K with 5 inputs. I didn't notice a remote though.
I was seriously looking for a good SS preamp when I was having tube issues. I finally got a good set from the stash and it's dead quiet, but I know it won't last. I'm getting too old to fuss with this stuff.

My preamp uses the Tortuga board, but is not built by Tortuga.

I found a thread of DIY Audio that talks about someone coming up with a quasi-kit version. Did you build it? Does someone else build them?
-Rod
It was built by Abacus Music, and I actually bought it right here on the Asylum Trader. I have a friend who built his own after hearing mine. We both had TVCs prior to that.

Do Abacus build them or was it a one off thing? Got any links to a build list?
-Rod
Shoot me an email and I will try to help.
