In Reply to: RE: Thoughts on Marantz PM-8005? thanks (nt) posted by AbeCollins on May 09, 2015 at 10:13:25
I have the PM8004. I have to say it does have a hefty midrange and good bass. Using it with my Monitor Audio RX2's you actually do get bass!
Being that it has a "polite" top end makes it sound like it's not the end word on detail. But I REALLY do like it a lot as a second system stereo. FARRR better than my NAD 326BEE.

I am a little surprised. I have been considering getting either an NAD or Marantz. Based on my past experience with both brands I expected the NAD to be more detailed and transparent. Why do you like the Marantz better?
NAD uses a simple audio trick to give the illusion of detail. How they do it is quite simple. They brighten up the top end and simply hollow out a "part" of the midrange. With a "hotter" top end this give the illusion of more detail and imagine. Now you loose a ton of music in the midrange. but hey - it seems to sound good!
If you're in the market for a $500 stereo then a AND would be hard to beat. If you're in the market for a stereo to really listen to music then weigh your options.
The reason I always say the Marantz isn't the end line in detail is because it does have a "polite" top end. Giving the illusion of low detail. In reality it has WONDERFUL midrange, bass, imagining, etc.... It is VERY musical and I do still enjoy using it almost every day. Just don't pair it with speakers with a muted top end.

The more research I do into the Marantz PM-8005, the more inclined I am to purchase. I do believe it will play nicely with the MA RS-6 speakers.
Also, most on-line Marantz dealers offer 30-60 day return policy.
Plenty of Marantz dealers vs Arcam, Creek, Exposure, etc.
I'm using mine on the MA RX2's and they sound fabulous. Plenty,or should I say a surprising amount of actual bass!
The MA tweeter should pair well with the character of the Marantz. Marantz has an extremely full and lush midrange similar to tube amps.
You'll enjoy it.
Now the question... who to purchase from?
Music Direct, Audio Advisor, Amazon (have to sales tax, though).
Here you go !
I got my gear from Crutchfield. Excellent return and exchange policy if you have defective gear. I'm speaking of my NAD that was not working and they sent another one even before I sent the broken one back.
Great bunch of honest guys.

I gave that info to the OP because it seems he is trying to save as much cash as possible. FYI: I am not the guy looking for this.
My mid-1990's NAD experience was a real disappointment so I've never considered them since. At $399 I bought what I thought would be a cut above mass market NAD receiver for my office that over looked the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder. That NAD was probably the worse receiver I ever owned. The user interface and remote was a convoluted mess to use, the tiny LCD screen was low contrast and ugly, and the thing sounded compressed, rolled off at both frequency extremes, and lacking dynamics. It was bland and lifeless.
I ended up buying a department store Onkyo receiver for $199, half what the NAD cost, and it was better in every respect compared to that NAD junker.
So I'm not surprised that inmate airtime prefers his modest Marantz integrated to his NAD.
