In Reply to: RE: Just acquired tube monoblocks. Now my speakers are suddenly out-of-phase. posted by givemevinyl on April 19, 2015 at 20:07:56
...what are the make, are you sure they are not mirror image, my icon audio M30 monoblocks are, and it can be easy to make a mistake even if the speaker taps are marked.

Mike.

Yes, they are indeed mirrored. I was at first certain that was the reason, but I've checked many times and can rule out a mistake in connection. Even a visual inspection verifies that everything (tubes, rca input, fuse, speaker taps, even the 110/220v tab) is mirrored EXCEPT for the speaker wires connected to the taps.
Also, I did verify that it works with either amp, left or right. As long as only one of the two has reversed polarity, everything is fine. I haven't determined whether it makes a difference sonically. Wouldn't this confirm that it's not an internal wiring problem since it applies to both amps?
A step I haven't tried is using the 16 ohm taps (I've only used the 8 ohm taps). I'm assuming that won't make a difference, but I'll check tonight. (Btw, my current speakers are 4 ohm, but I assume that shouldn't cause polarity issues. For what it's worth, I'm expecting 10 ohm speakers next week.)
I sure would want to have a tech look them over, the problem will literally be as obvious as comparing the two and looking for wire color differences. The fix is slightly more difficult, but you shouldn't be out more than $100 to get this addressed.

Doesn't matter which amp is wired incorrectly, the sound will be out of phase, are the amps not externally marked +/- for the speaker connector terminals.

If the same thing happens when you try the other taps and speakers, then you need to reverse the internal speaker taps on one amp, but without looking at them I couldn't tell you which one.
Internally wire the amps in phase first, then worry about correct polarity later.

Mike.
